Sandbags, Independence Day, Stormwater, PFAS and more.
We are implementing a sandbag distribution program, giving eight bags to Plantation households. Public Works Director Matt Thompson calls it “distribution under blue skies.”
We will provide the bags with ties and residents will be able to fill them up with sand. Assistance will be offered to individuals with disabilities.
Distribution is planned from July 1-31 at the Public Works compound, 750 NW 91st Ave:
- Monday - Friday: 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Saturday: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
All hours are weather permitting. Closed on Sundays and the 4th of July. Call 954-452-2535 for more information.

While our weekend concerts have moved, I just want to remind you that July 4 evening festivities will be at Central Park, as always.
That includes a 20-minute fireworks show at 9 p.m. Evening starts at 6 p.m. with food trucks and children’s activities and music from 7-10 p.m. (this year the headliner is Mr. Nice Guy).
Our annual parade kicks off at 9 a.m. at NW 46th Avenue and Broward Boulevard and concludes at City Hall. A “Patriotic Pool Day” follows with free admission for residents to the Plantation Aquatic Complex from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Plantation Walk also has announced plans this year. While they’re planning their own celebration activities, they intend to have the parking lot rooftop cleared for attendees to see the Central Park fireworks.

The required second reading of a city ordinance allowing speed cameras in school zones is among the items on the agenda for Wednesday’s 6:30 p.m. City Council meeting.
Drivers who go 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit will receive a $100 citation, but no points toward their license. The Florida Legislature in 2023 approved the statute making school zone speed cameras legal statewide. The goal is to support our police department’s efforts to improve safety in school zones.
Expect Wednesday’s City Council meeting to be a long one. There are several presentations and items on the agenda. I’d like to note that there is only one meeting next month, on July 24, and that’s to discuss our maximum millage tax rate. So we need to get a lot of city business done now.

City Engineer Samira Shalan will document recent improvements – and challenges – to the city’s stormwater system in a special workshop at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.
Stormwater manager Bill Mulder works under Shalan and has led efforts to clean out drainage pipes and structures across the city to improve water flow. But there are many factors, as Shalan will explain.
Utilities Director Danny Pollio will explain how Planation works to ensure that our drinking water is compliant (and more!) with all state and federal regulations. He and the City’s consultant will explain PFAs and the impact of recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
This presentation will be part of Wednesday’s City Council meeting and is the beginning of our efforts to educate the public about PFAs and how you can reduce your exposure to these harmful chemicals
