I was delighted to speak at the ribbon-cutting for The Palms at Plantation, a new senior living facility.
The Palms, at 1019 South S.R. 7, has been open for about a month, with assisted living and memory care.
The facility is a result of the City’s economic development efforts to continue improving our Gateway district that also include a new Publix on the way and several revamped businesses.

Long-time Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce President Siobhan Edwards was lauded in a proclamation at the City Council meeting on June 26. Chamber members and former mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic were present.
Council member Jennifer Andreu initiated the proclamation, based on Edwards’ 26 years of service.
Edwards has “advocated and empowered hundreds of small businesses, fostering economic growth and driving prosperity in the city of Plantation,” the proclamation read.
Utilities Director Danny Pollio led a presentation on PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, at the last Council meeting. City engaged a consultant to develop an educational campaign that explains how our water treatment works and what residents can do to limit their exposure to PFAS. We use nanofiltration, which is an advanced technology that protects you from multiple contaminants in the water. If you missed the presentation, check out our website www.plantation.org/PFAS.
Additionally, I’d like to recognize the hard work of our Utilities laboratory staff who conduct multiple tests on the daily basis with great precision to make sure your water meets and exceeds all regulatory standards. They recently received certificates of excellence for their proficiency in testing our drinking and non-potable water.

State Representative Lisa Dunkley, District 97, spoke in Council chambers about the recent legislative session. Her priorities include veterans assistance, schools and education, health and human services.
Representative Dunkley sits on several committees and sponsored or supported bills that advance these issues. She also spoke about an HOA bill that established education requirements for the board of directors. It also requires that official records are posted on the association’s website.
She is one of three elected officials representing Plantation in the State legislature. You can contact her at 954-746-1762.

The Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Library presented the city with a $20,539.64 donation check at the Council meeting on June 26.
The funds will be used to purchase traditional and electronic books and audio-visual materials for adults and children. Donation also supports adult programming, a subscription to Mango Languages online, story time supplies, and the Summer Reading Program.
The mission of the Friends of the Library today remains the same as when they were formed in 1970: “to promote and foster the use and growth of the Plantation Library.” They raise most of the funds via used book sales and an annual author luncheon. Membership information is available at www.plantation.org/library.

Residents have asked me why the July 4 event is at Plantation Central Park, rather than Pine Island Park. The answer is fireworks.
Display areas must have an ample "fall zone," an area that is based on the size of the shells launched into the air that make the pretty colors. There's just not enough space at Pine Island Park for an adequate fall zone. Also note that we close some parking areas at the Central Park to accommodate it.
Happy Independence Day, Plantation! See you at the parade at 9 a.m. and at the Central Park in the evening on the 4th.

City Council approved the installation of speed detection cameras at 15 school zones in the city, based on the speeding data. Notices of violation will be issued to those who speed more than 10 miles above the posted speed limit after the video evidence is reviewed by the city’s police department.
Our vendor still needs to secure the permits to install the devices and we will do a public awareness campaign. Expect to see more information, signs and a warning period in the beginning of this upcoming school year.
We hope this initiative will help slow traffic and improve safety at our school zones. After it is fully deployed, City Council has requested a 6-month data review at the public meeting to make sure the program is working.
