Dogs in Some Parks, Burtons open, Memorial Day, Proclamations and more.
We are close to allowing dog owners to walk in one of our parks together with their pets. The City Council on Wednesday approved the first reading of an ordinance that relaxes a general policy against pets in parks.
My thinking: Most dog owners are responsible and perfectly comfortable with complying with a six-foot leash requirement; and many parks are spacious enough that it makes sense.
More common sense: We still will not allow dogs in our “Active Parks,” such as Central Park, PAL Park, Pine Island Park, Pop Travers or Sunset Park. Nor can we permit them near our community centers, such as Volunteer Park, Plantation Community Center and Jim Ward Community Center.

But venues such as Jacaranda Lakes Park, Deicke Park and Liberty Tree Park are less crowded, and that’s where we are relaxing the rules.
I’d like to thank Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Patricia (Trish) O’Toole, who has been working on this almost since the day I took office. As she did in deploying our tobacco-free zones, she studied policies from other municipalities, consulted with the Florida Recreation and Park Association and created an ordinance that works for our residents.
The second reading will be June 12.

Market on University continues to fill up, with Burtons Grill and Bar celebrating its opening this week. Burtons replaces Carrabba’s, which was destroyed in the 2019 explosion.
There are 19 Burtons Grill locations along the east coast, including one in Boca Raton. Officials say their Crab Crusted Haddock, Maxx Burger, steaks, and entrée salads are among their most popular fare. They are also known for being food allergy friendly and their gluten-free menu.

Heads of our larger departments presented their budget ideas to the City Council during a workshop Wednesday.
The budget process starts with the strategic planning in the winter and, in the spring, we evaluate our employee roster and future needs. We are now looking at expenses from each department.
We will set a maximum millage rate in July and must approve a budget in September, which takes effect Oct. 1.
The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are being played this summer, and we are seeking Olympians with ties to Plantation to celebrate them during this period!
We plan to highlight each Olympian on our social media pages during the course of the Olympic games.
Are you an Olympian or do you know of an Olympian who lived or currently lives in Plantation? Let us know!
Send an email to parksmarketing@plantation.org with the following information: Olympian’s name, contact information if available, sport played, the country they represented, and which games/year they competed. Although these are the Summer Olympics, we would also be interested in athletes who competed in the Winter Olympics.
For more information please call (954) 452-2502.

The 2024 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, running from June 1 to June 14, coincides with the start of the six-month hurricane season. During this period, consumers will not have to pay sales taxes on items ranging from batteries to portable generators.
Take advantage of this opportunity to complete your storm season preparations. We urge all residents to take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being. You can start by assembling an emergency kit with essentials such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, and batteries. Stay informed about weather updates through reliable sources, and review your family's emergency plan, ensuring everyone knows what to do in case of a storm.
By preparing now, we can help protect our community and minimize the impacts of severe weather. For more tips, visit our website.
