Plantation Turns 71, Communication Boards, Events and more.
We wish Mayor Sortal a swift and full recovery during his leave of absence. In his absence, we will continue to provide our community with updates and information from the City Administration Office. Let's all support the Mayor with our best wishes during this time.
On Tuesday, April 23, we hosted the County Commissioner Hazelle Rogers and an amazing group of Plantation Middle students.
They took on the roles as the Mayor, City Council members, and department heads and held a formal meeting where they addressed resident comments, approved purchases, discussed and voted on a new beautification program.
In addition, Sandy Gracey of Park East received a proclamation recognizing her for embodying the spirit of volunteerism.
State Representatives Lisa Dunkley and Daryl Campbell, joined Commissioner Rogers and Plantation Council members Jennifer Andreu, Tim Fadgen, and Denise Horland to support these future leaders.

Incorporated on April 30, 1953, Plantation has grown and thrived over the decades. In 2023, we celebrated our momentous 70th anniversary with heartfelt gratitude towards our residents, dedicated business owners, and cherished visitors.
We organized a vibrant series of events, including a lively pool party, cake cutting and an enchanting night out complete with a drone show, all designed to bring our community together in celebration (watch a recap video here and find more memories on our social media platforms).
Throughout the past year, we also took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on Plantation's rich history, unveil its hidden gems, and showcase its vibrant events scene. As we look back on 70 remarkable years, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the bright future that lies ahead for our beloved city. Here's to year 71!

Last Tuesday, we unveiled a bilingual playground communication board at Plantation Woods Park. Nine such boards were generously donated to the Parks and Recreation Department by a former Plantation resident and speech -language pathologist Pamela Rowe.
A communication board features a composition of images specifically selected to support communication by pointing to or touching one or multiple images.

Children with limited verbal skills, such as some children with Autism or multiple disabilities, can communicate with their caregivers and other children through the use of these boards.
The boards will be placed by the playgrounds at Plantation Community Center, Volunteer Park, Central Park, Deicke Park, Jim Ward Community Center, Seminole Park, Jacaranda Lakes, Pine Island Park, and Sunset Park.

Autism Acceptance Month
The City proclaimed April as Autism Acceptance Month to emphasize understanding, appreciation, and celebration of the diverse strengths and perspectives of individuals on the autism spectrum.
The HDS Foundation celebrated their 15th Anniversary by hosting the We R.I.S.E. for Autism Golf Classic on April 26, 2024 at Jacaranda Golf Club. “R.I.S.E.” stands for “Resources, Interventions, Support, Education” and strives to "bridge" the gap in services and opportunities for autistic children, adolescents and young adults.

Small Business Month
We recognized the Small Business Month by presenting the proclamation to Plantation’s local businesses Dutchy’s, Just Spoons, Tobias Financial, LAC Accounting & Book Keeping Services and Luggage & Shoe Repair Expert.
Small businesses are the backbone of local economies and serve as job creators and place-makers in our city districts. Shopping locally allows Plantation residents to invest in their own neighborhoods.
Let’s continue supporting them.
