Join University of Plantation, Crack'd Kitchen, Chief Harrison serves 40 years, EyeOnWater and more.
I'm delighted to announce the launch of University of Plantation (UP), a citizens academy designed to educate residents. Many municipalities have such initiatives and we gathered the best practices to create ours.
The Police Outreach Center at Broward Mall will host the academy. We will offer a series of five one-hour sessions, scheduled once a month from January to May on Thursdays. The sessions will be presented by City staff, and will cover a range of topics from procurement, permitting, budgeting, tree placement and removal. We will also explore the role of a strong mayor.
Registration is limited to 18 attendees. It’s first-come, first-served, so apply today to make sure you get your spot at www.Plantation.org/UP.

Crack’d Kitchen & Coffee, a medium-priced breakfast/lunch spot, opened at Plantation Walk.
Menu items feature breakfast and lunch sandwiches, bowls, chicken tenders, greens, smoothies and shakes. Farm fresh, cage-free eggs are used in their dishes. I could easily see residents in the nearby apartments placing an online order and going on their way.
The restaurant had a soft open on Saturday and was rolling Monday morning with a crowd.
This is the fifth Crack’d Kitchen to open, but the first in Florida. Go to CrackdKitchen.com or call 754-755-5445.

The city honored Police Chief Howard Harrison, who marked 40 years with the Plantation Police Department. But it wasn’t easy. Harrison prefers to defer the attention to others in the department.
Still, he received balloons during the Council meeting and a cake during a police staff meeting.
Harrison grew up in Plantation and is a proud South Plantation High alum. I arranged for Principal Christine Henschel to show up at the Council meeting, where she thanked him for always supporting the school.
Prior to serving 14 years as Police Chief, Harrison began his law enforcement career as a road patrol officer and rose through the ranks to a deputy chief position. His experience also includes service as a detective, street crimes and SWAT sergeant, traffic motorcycle officer and traffic homicide investigator.

The Friends of the Library presented the Library Director Monika Knapp with a $5,000 donation at its annual holiday luncheon Monday, Dec. 11.
The South Plantation High School choir provided the entertainment.
The Friends often hold used book sales and provide other support to the city’s Library, and I, for one, am very grateful.

The lighting was accompanied by prayers for soldiers and the community, music and festive activities. This special occasion brought people together to celebrate the values of hope, light, and community during the holiday season.
