Melbourne's Trash Bash Yields 3,830 Pounds of Litter |
The City's Environmental Community Outreach (ECO) Division successfully completed another Trash Bash event. The City of Melbourne is much cleaner thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff, organizations and volunteers.
Held on April 11, 152 volunteers collected 110 bags and a total of 3,830 pounds of litter from eight sites, including Adopt-a-Road groups throughout the city. Some of the largest items collected were a couch, love seat, a large tire, pallets and sheet metal.
Special thanks to our sponsors - Waste Management (WM), McDonalds, and Publix.

The City of Melbourne earned the FPL rebate by investing in a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient thermal air conditioning system at the Joseph Pellicano Law Enforcement Center, which opened last year.
The air conditioning system’s chillers produce large quantities of ice in the middle of the night when electricity rates are less expensive than during peak daytime hours.
The air conditioning system then uses this ice to cool the air in the building during the day. FPL incentivizes this installation and use of this type of system to encourage off-peak energy usage.
The police station is in use 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the chillers being the highest electricity usage system in the building.
Restricting their use to off-peak evening hours (middle of the night) results in the City paying less for electricity than it would otherwise.
This off-peak use of electricity for cooling results in a 30% – 50% savings over a conventional air conditioning system in a similar-sized building.
During the initial design of the Joseph Pellicano Law Enforcement Center, the Melbourne City Council approved additional funds to purchase and install this type of energy-efficient air conditioning system, knowing that it would pay for itself in energy savings within 10 years and would continue to save the City money for years to come.
The Beautification and Energy Efficiency Board also supported the investment to help further the City’s energy-efficiency goals.

On March 12, CK Contractors and Development, LLC completed the reconstruction and upgrade of Lift Station No. 17. Originally constructed in 1964 and located at 1469 Sarno Road, the station had reached the end of its service life and required replacement. The previous station operated using outdated vacuum-assisted suction-lift pumps. This system relied on applying vacuum pressure to the pump suction piping when the pumps cycled off, lifting the wastewater column above the wet well’s water surface to keep the pumps primed. Because it depended on the proper operation of the vacuum-assist system, this method proved to be unreliable.
The new lift station features a conventional wet well equipped with submersible pumps, along with an aboveground valve pad, a new control panel, a standby emergency generator, electrical upgrades, a new access driveway, and new fencing with a gate.
