Color Your Summer with Learning, Discovery and Fun 😎

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava

Message from Miami-Dade County
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava

Summer is a time of exploration and inspiration, and there’s no better place to spark your imagination – and take a break from the heat – than your local Miami-Dade public library.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge, themed Color Our World, celebrates the joy and power of reading and creativity. Library cardholders 18 years and younger can earn weekly rewards and are eligible for a chance to win great prizes – just by reading and attending library events! The challenge runs through July 26 and is a fun way to stay connected with books all summer long.

Reading over the summer is especially important for students, helping prevent the “summer slide” – learning loss that can happen during summer break. By participating in the Summer Reading Challenge and other library programs, students can stay sharp and be confident heading into the new school year. And don’t forget, kids, teens and adults can enjoy a variety of fun and engaging library programs all year long, including storytimes, arts and crafts, STEAM activities and much more.

The library also offers support for all ages beyond the page. The Homework Help & Tutoring Program provides free tutoring for students in grades K–12, helping them strengthen their skills in reading, math and science. Summer sessions will be available at 28 library locations every Saturday from June 14 through August 9, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. For adults, the online Adult Learning Academy offers free English and Spanish language classes, as well as U.S. Citizenship test preparation. The summer semester runs from June 23 through August 28. Taught by certified teachers, these programs empower residents to learn, grow and succeed at every stage of life.

Our libraries are essential to a strong and thriving community. They provide free access to books, technology, educational support and enriching experiences to everyone across our county.

This summer, visit your local library and explore everything it has to offer! Together, let’s “Color Our World” with imagination, knowledge and connection.

Yours in service,

Daniella Levine Cava
Mayor, Miami-Dade County

Maria Galeano

Maria Galeano Nurtures Young Minds at the Library 💡

Maria Galeano has always had a natural gift for learning and sharing knowledge. Before joining the Library in May 2024 as a page at the Coral Gables Branch, she worked with Miami Dade College’s Horticulture Department, where she maintained campus gardens and mentored students in plant science. Her passion for education also led her to volunteer with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Master Gardener Program, hosting plant workshops at local libraries.

Now serving as the Young Adult Librarian at the Arcola Lakes Branch Library, Maria supports teen services and contributes to a wide range of programs.

What is your favorite part about working for the Library?
Definitely my wonderful colleagues and the people we serve! I also really appreciate how we’re encouraged to develop programs that can meaningfully address educational needs or expand access to opportunities in our communities.

What do you consider a personal achievement in your career at the Library?
Considering I’ve only been in my current role for a few months, I’m really proud of how much I’ve learned. There’s always more to discover, but I feel like I’m gradually getting the hang of it.

What is your favorite Library resource?
I’d have to say the Libby, by OverDrive app! As someone who reads mostly digital books these days, it’s been incredibly convenient. I love that it gives me free access to a vast collection of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and more.

Are you working on any new projects?
Yes! I’m developing a couple of programs I’m really excited about. One focuses on simple cooking with teens and the other explores the cultural significance of spices that can be grown right here in Miami-Dade.

Is there anything else you’d like to let us know about yourself?
I’m a big fruit enthusiast – one of the perks of living in Miami! I’ve also developed a habit of watching international market tours online. There’s something so interesting about discovering diverse food cultures from around the world.
