Brandon Fernandez

employee spotlight

IT Technician Brandon Fernandez Loves Tinkering with Technology at the Library 🔧

Brandon Fernandez has always been captivated by technology and computers. From a young age, his love for information technology set the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him to the Library. Before joining Miami-Dade County's Information Technology Department (ITD) in September 2023, Brandon worked as a freelance systems integrator, gaining valuable hands-on experience in troubleshooting and managing technology.

Today, Brandon is responsible for addressing and resolving IT issues across all our library locations. Each day, he strives to ensure seamless technology operations and access for both our patrons and staff.

What is your favorite part about working for ITD/providing IT services for the Library?
My favorite part is the challenge. I thrive on solving tough problems, especially when they initially stump me. It’s a rewarding experience to work through technical issues and find appropriate solutions.

What do you consider to be a personal achievement in your career at ITD?
Upgrading all the children’s computers at the North Dade Regional Library on my own. It was a large task, and I was proud of how efficiently I handled it, knowing that the work directly impacted the library's services for the community.

What is your favorite Library resource?
My favorite resources are the YOUmedia and YOUmake Miami spaces. It’s great to see younger generations having access to the latest technology and being able to gain hands-on experience, much like I did growing up. It’s fulfilling to know these spaces are sparking creativity in young minds.

Can you suggest any helpful IT tips or best practices for internet usage or cybersecurity?
Absolutely! The internet is an amazing tool, but it can also be risky. Be cautious with the personal information you share online and always be on the lookout for phishing scams. They often appear as fake emails designed to steal your data, but once you know the signs, they’re easy to spot. With the right precautions, the internet can be a safe and powerful resource.

Is there anything else you’d like to let us know about yourself?
I’m a huge fan of video games, board games and all things science-fiction. Right now, I’m really into Star Wars and diving more into the expanded universe.
