Employee spotlight
Social Worker Daymi Roman is Making a Lasting Impact in Our Community 🤝
Daymi Roman's dedication to helping those in need, including our four-legged friends, has been a driving force throughout her career. Before joining the Library as a Social Worker in June 2022, she held various roles at Miami-Dade County's Animal Services Department, including adoption counselor, kennel staff and Animal Welfare Officer and Investigator. She also has prior experience as a Social Worker at several correctional and assisted living facilities, mental health institutions, and halfway house programs.
In her current role as part of the Social Services team at the Main Library, Daymi assists patrons with a wide range of services, including food/SNAP benefits, affordable housing options and more.
What inspired you to pursue a Library career? I've always had a heart for helping people. Being able to build a relationship with someone and help improve their livelihood is so worthwhile, especially when they have difficult backgrounds and haven’t experienced help like this before.
What is your favorite part about working for the Library? I love that no two days are ever the same. I don’t see the same patrons every day, nor do I provide the same services every day. It keeps my work very interesting!
What do you consider to be a personal achievement in your career at the Library? One memorable case involved a patron whose Social Security payments were stopped due to an expired green card. I guided him to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website, which I had taken upon myself to learn more about to better serve our patrons, where he was able to find the information he needed. He renewed his green card for free, reinstated his benefits and even secured housing (since he had proof of legal status). He was my first success story and definitely has not been the last.
What was the last book you read and what did you think of it? Death From Child Abuse … and No One Heard by Dana Weikel and Eve Krupinski. It's based on a true story and sheds light on the tragic consequences of child neglect. It's a painful reminder that child abuse exists yet it also serves as a call to action, fueling my commitment to helping vulnerable children.
Is there anything else you’d like to let us know about yourself? I really enjoy music and playing guitar. I also own a lot of pets, including a dog, two cats, a snake, fish and chickens. It's basically a mini-zoo - I love all of my animals!
