Environmental Awareness
Preserving Our Environment Through Artwork
Climate of Art was created as a way for people to connect with the Library, learn more about preserving the environment, and experience our YOUmake Miami makerspaces.
Since the program first began, Climate of Art has won several awards for its innovation, including the prestigious Urban Libraries Council Award in 2020. Dayna Cortes, Library Media Project Instructor, says the program is all about engaging people and raising awareness about the environment and resilience.
“People of all ages work together with the staff to create eco-friendly art pieces and get to have their artwork displayed during the final two-day art exhibit,” says Cortes.

Summer Reading Challenge Keeps Kids Engaged and Learning
Dontaya Cotman is a regular at Main Library in downtown Miami with her six nieces and nephews, who wear orange “field trip” t-shirts during their visits. She’s created a family summer camp for them, incorporating our Summer Reading Challenge into their plans.
Young book enthusiast Torre’l Cotman, age 10, enjoys the visits to the library and is excited about participating in the challenge. "I get to learn more things," she said.
The Summer Reading Challenge offers a chance for kids to avoid the “summer slide,” when lessons learned during the school year could be lost. Families can also spend quality time together reading books and participating in library programs for a chance to win prizes at the end of summer!
Learn more and sign up at www.mdpls.org/summerreading.
