Happy May Day!
May Day, usually celebrated on May 1, is a European festival of ancient origins to celebrate the start of summer though it falls between the spring equinox and the summer solstice.
Traditions included gathering wildflowers, weaving floral garlands, crowning a May Queen, and setting up a maypole for dancing.
In 1889, May 1 was selected as the date for International Workers' Day to commemorate the Chicago Haymarket Affair and the struggle for the eight-hour work day we still enjoy. Sometimes International Workers' Day is referred to as May Day, because they fall on the same date. Besides that commonality, the two events are unrelated.

Swimmers Rescued – Job well done by Firefighter-Paramedic Andrew Shook and Firefighter Emergency Medical Technician John Strickland (and Flagler Beach Fire Department's Christian Carre) for the rescue of four victims from the Atlantic Ocean on April 8. Upon arrival Flagler County Fire Rescue found four swimmers in obvious distress, and immediately entered the water.
These first responders were able to rescue three of the four swimmers quickly. Very shortly after Flagler County Fire Rescue’s arrival, the Flagler Beach Fire Department arrived and rescued the fourth victim. The bravery and dedication of the entire Fire Rescue Department speaks volumes to our community. Keep up the good work!

Eagle Saved – Land Management received a call April 6 from a person at Haw Creek who came across a juvenile bald eagle caught in a fence between Haw Creek and the farm to the north. He called and asked if the county had any way to help to rescue the eagle. After a couple calls we found that FWC only responds under limited conditions. Also, the closest bird-of-prey rescue facility (H.A.W.K.E. in St. Johns County) will accept injured birds but doesn’t travel to rescue them.
Public Lands & Natural Resource Manager Mike Lagasse asked Rauney Mitchell, Land Management Technician and River to Sea Caretaker (who has a past history of working with birds of prey), if he would go take a look. He went out that evening and was able to safely extract the bird – safely for Rauney and for the bird – and get it to the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, in Maitland, where they have a raptor rehabilitation clinic. Since then, the center has let Land Management know that the eagle was severely dehydrated but somehow not badly injured after being caught in that fence for possibly several days. So they are rehydrating it, getting it healthy and will bring it back to release at Haw Creek once it is viable to do so. Thank you for after-hours efforts to rescue a national symbol of the United States of America.

Fast Action – Flagler County first responders jump into action before there is even a call for service. Firefighter-Paramedics Prince Mack and Marianne Huston were getting their lunch on April 7 at Chick-fil-A when a gentleman in the restaurant began to choke. Thanks to their quick action, he is alive to tell the story.
Flagler County staffers always have the best interest of the community at heart. Thank you for all you do!

Flagler County's first "Bring a Kid to Work Day" on April 27 was a huge success. There were scores of happy children and parents thrilled to share a bit about what they do for the safety, health, and happiness of our residents, visitors, and businesses. In addition to our family at the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners, the Constitutional Officers and their teams participated.
A huge "Thank You!" shout out to the Employee Engagement Committee, which made all the arrangements, and to County Administrator Heidi Petito who envisioned this wonderful event!
#WorkingBetterTogether
Welcome back Flagler County Health Fair! It was a busy morning on April 28 as staff members filed into the Emergency Operations Center for biometric screenings, to speak with more than a dozen vendors (all with great giveaways), and participate in games and tests of skill with high hopes of winning fabulous prizes. Everyone also enjoyed the complimentary mini donuts from Coastal Donuts.
Thank you to Human Resources, especially Benefits & Wellness Manager Anita Stoker, for bringing all of these resources together in one convenient location for employees.
