FWRI's Gainesville Freshwater Fisheries Research Lab is one of over two dozen field labs located throughout the state of Florida. This lab is home to freshwater fisheries research, conservation social science and freshwater invertebrate research programs where biologists work to study, protect, and conserve Florida's freshwater resources.
 Coral Moving Day
78 corals were transported recently as part of the Florida Coral Rescue and Propagation Project! The Florida Coral Rescue and Propagation Project is an innovative initiative started in 2018 to collect thousands of corals as protection against stony coral tissue loss disease. Corals are now being held and gene banked all over the country in 14 different states and 25 facilities. Without this critical conservation effort, these corals would likely have died in the wild.
 Saving the Sea Turtles
On January 28, members of the Sea Turtle Stranding Team from the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute responded to St. Joseph Bay to rescue cold-stunned sea turtles. When water temperatures drop below 50°F, sea turtles can become cold-stunned. They may become weak and unable to swim because they cannot regulate their body temperature. If you see injured, distressed, or dead sea turtles, please report it immediately to our Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) so trained responders can assist.
 Manatee Rescue in Crystal River
In late December 2025, FWC and USFWS Refuge verified public reports of an emaciated and listing adult female with a large calf in Kings Bay, Crystal River. On January 8, a rescue team from FWC, USFWS Refuge and ZooTampa located and rescued the mother – calf pair in Kings Spring for evaluation. The adult female was transported to SeaWorld Orlando where she is receiving treatment and rehabilitation. The male calf was approximately 7ft and in good body condition and large enough to be independent, so he was released onsite.
