Job Description 

Conduct stone crab fishery independent and dependent monitoring in Florida, primarily in the south region. This position is subject to rigorous field work in near and offshore waters, data entry, scientific data anlyses, and dissemination of results, ability to foster and maintain working relationships with industry professionals. Must be able to work autonomously and maintain excellent communication with supervisor. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Safe vessel operation and vessel traiering
  • Conducting fisheries field sampling year-round in a variety of adverse conditions
  • Coordinating sampling trips with contracted fishermen
  • Running successful field sampling trips in the southwest Florida region
  • Occassional overnight travel to conduct sampling trips in neighboring regions
  • Processing field samples following standardized protocols
  • Maintaining and repairing sampling gear and research equipment used in routine fisheries monitoring. 
  • Entering data into a computer and proof and correct data to ensure accurate entry. 
  • Potential for Analyzing data from above studies. 
  • Participating in preparing technical and scientific reports and/or manuscripts. 
  • Maintaining scientific collection records. 
  • Maintaining good relations with co-workers and participating contracted fishermen. 
  • Participate in public outreach efforts, as appropriate.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological or life sciences. 

**Applicants with boat operation and trailering experience may be given preference 

Knowledge, Skill(s), and Abilities

The entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform job duties are: Knowledge of methods and gear used for collection of biological or fisheries samples and of personal computers and database software. Familiarity with computer-based biological analytical programs.  Ability to perform strenuous field duties in adverse conditions; travel as necessary to conduct field sampling; collect and analyze biological or fisheries data; prepare technical reports and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and maintain a valid driver’s license.
