Title: Fish and Wildlife Biologist IV

Working title: Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator

Salary: $1,711.82 bi-weekly + benefits

Location: Tallahassee Florida

Description:  This is an advanced professional position managing and coordinating all activities associated with administering the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail (GFBWT) within Habitat and Species Conservation’s Wildlife Viewing Program. The Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail is a network of 513 premier wildlife viewing sites across the state. This is a career service position with an annual salary of $44,507.32                                                                

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Main tasks of this position include:

Maintain communication with site managers and staff at the 513 Trail sites, key trail stakeholders and partners.

Maintain current and develop new print and electronic communication products including printed trail guides, and website (floridabirdingtrail.com).  

Market and promote the Trail to Floridians and visitors including writing and distributing the monthly Kite Tales newsletter, and social media posts to the trail’s social media platforms.

Develop and implement a process evaluating new sites for addition to the trail.

Maintain the Trails roadside wayfinding sign infrastructure including improving the sign excel database.

Develop and implement a process to fabricate and install new wayfinding signs as needed at new and unsigned sites.

Develop and implement a site evaluation process for current Trail sites

Develop and implement a GFBWT outreach program to instruct site staff on what it means to be on the trail.

Work with agency diversity staff to develop and implement Trail products to introduce the Trail to a diverse audience.

Work with partners to plan and conduct GFBWT promotional talks and bird and butterfly hikes.

Promote and conduct programs associated with FWCs Wildlife Management Areas.

 

Additionally, the position accomplishes the following:

Broadens awareness and support for wildlife conservation and the agency mission.

Promotes Wildlife Viewing programs and FWC at various festivals and events, including conducting tours and talks during the events.

Writes and submits for publication articles promoting wildlife viewing in Florida.

Represent the agency on state, regional and national programs and committees; and serve as representative on the National Wildlife Viewing and Nature Tourism Working Group, including participation in conference calls and at the yearly conference or working group meeting.

Prepare and monitor budgets.

Develop strategic and operational work plans and prepare required program reports.

 

Telework:  This position has the potential to work up to two days remotely.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Strong project management skills

Knowledge of Florida’s natural communities.

Advanced knowledge of Florida birds and birding.

Ability to lead bird hikes for beginner birders

Working knowledge of Florida’s butterflies, moths, dragonflies, reptiles, and amphibians

Excellent public speaking skills.

Advanced writing skills.

Skilled in using computer software applications particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe and Acrobat Professional.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple work assignments.

Ability to collaborate with others.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to create and distribute routine reports.

Ability to utilize problem solving techniques and apply critical thinking skills.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to collect, organize, evaluate and analyze data.

Ability to design, edit and produce a variety of program materials.

Ability to maintain a valid drives’ license.

Ability to travel when required (1-25%).

 

Minimum Qualification:  A minimum of a  Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a life or physical science. A master’s degree is preferred.
