DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES:

This position is responsible for supporting the Florida Bass Conservation Center’s stock enhancement program. Assists in daily tank and pond fish culture activities, including harvesting ponds, assisting with water quality monitoring, tank or pond feeding, tank and raceway cleaning, operating tractors and mowers, and monitoring system control devices.  Transport fish, grade fish, and inspects fish cultured within the hatchery. Assist with manual fish spawning activities, egg collection and incubation. Conduct repairs to equipment such as pumps, motors, fish hauling trailers, etc. Repairs nets and fish screens as needed. Conduct repairs to hatchery property as required. Maintains grounds using lawn equipment and assists with controlling aquatic weeds in ponds by spraying chemicals as requested.

Responsible for following the provisions and requirements in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, related to the Department of Financial Services rules and FWC’s invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures.

Work at FWC is cross-functional meaning duties may cross division/office lines.  The FWC expects employees to function across FWC’s organizational structure by providing their skills and expertise wherever needed through work on teams or as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife techniques and common population parameter measurements
  • Knowledge of quality fish and wildlife habitat characteristics
  • Knowledge of basic construction fabrication techniques
  • Skill in the use of heavy equipment, trailers, tractors, landscape maintenance equipment, bush hogs, building tools and mechanical repair
  • Skill in the use of welders, shop and automotive tools
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions specific to sampling and evaluation of fish and wildlife populations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to fish and wildlife management
  • Ability to travel overnight and work flexible hours to meet project objectives
  • Ability to handle heavy shipping and receiving orders up to 50 pounds

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must possess a valid boaters safety education identification card prior to operating any agency vessel. The selected employee must already possess a boater safety card or be willing and able to obtain one within 30 days of hiring.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • An associate of science degree from an accredited college in the field of wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agricultural or constructive experience.
  • An associate of arts or science degree from an accredited college and two years of wildlife, fisheries, environmental or related agricultural or constructive experience.
  • Sixty semester hours at an accredited college or university which includes 21 semester hours in wildlife, fisheries, and environmental, ecological, biological or agricultural studies may substitute for the required college.
  • Vocational training or post high school experience in the above areas may be substituted for the required college on a year-for-year basis.

POSITION DETAILS:

Office hours are from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday

This position requires travel up to 25% and work time outside of regular scheduled hours.
