Red Tide Mid-Week Update for January 13, 2021

Current Conditions
A bloom of the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persists in Southwest Florida. Background to high concentrations of K. brevis were detected in 42 samples over the past week. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were observed in 32 samples collected from Lee and Collier counties. Additional details are provided below.

• In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in Sarasota County (in one sample), background to high concentrations in Lee County (in 24 samples), and medium to high concentrations in and offshore of Collier County (in 17 samples).
• In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was not observed.
• Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was not observed.

Respiratory irritation was reported over the past week in Southwest Florida at several locations in Lee and Collier counties. For current conditions, please visit: https://visitbeaches.org.

Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides for Pinellas to northern Monroe counties predict net southern transport of surface waters and southeastern movement of subsurface waters in most areas over the next four days.
