OFFICE OVERVIEW

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) mission is to manage fish and wildlife resources for their long-term well-being and the benefit of people. The head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is the commission, comprised of seven commissioners, appointed by the governor and subject to confirmation by the Senate. The commission has the authority to exercise the executive and regulatory powers delegated to FWC through Article IV, Section 9 of the Florida Constitution.

The Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN), housed within FWC’s Office of Strategic Initiatives, coordinates youth conservation programming in the FWC. This program oversees a statewide network of partners who provide opportunities for youth and families to participate in outdoor activities, which inspires lifelong passion for nature-based recreation and conservation.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION

-Bachelor’s degree with major course of study in education, or environmental or natural science, or a bachelor’s degree in any course of study and 4 years professional experience in the field of fish and wildlife conservation or environmental policy.

-Minimum of three years experience as formal or non-formal educator.

-Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible supervisory/management experience, including program-level management.

-First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (within 6 months of employment)

-FWC Trailer Training (within 6 months of employment)

-Boater Safety Certification (within 6 months of employment)

-Hunter Safety Certification (within 6 months of employment)

-USA Archery Level I Certification (within 6 months of employment)

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

This position serves as the Director of the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN). Incumbent serves as the primary administrative lead and coordinates, internally and externally, all program planning and implementation of FYCCN and provides agency-wide coordination of youth conservation programs.

 

Effectively communicates with a wide range of public and private partners and serves as the primary liaison for the FYCCN among its partners, the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida (FWFF), FWC leadership, and the public who use FYCCN youth education centers. Oversees development and implementation of FYCCN annual budget and FWFF section accounts and coordinates long-range planning and development. Manages FWC youth camp facilities and coordinates site planning and construction efforts for each facility. Develops communication strategies designed to increase and diversify participation. Provides personnel management for statewide staff.

 

Responsible for the Project WILD program and distribution of conservation education materials statewide. Oversees creation of conservation education curricula for FYCCN education centers and school programs and ensures correlation with state educational standards. Develops effective analysis tools to assess impacts of FYCCN programs on youth. Directs the agency’s efforts to streamline youth and family education programs and evaluation strategies. Serves as lead on all agency youth safety policies and procedures.

 

Administrative Duties: Attend staff meetings, complete and submit required reports, participate in professional development courses, and complete timesheets in a timely and thorough manner. Assure that files and documentation are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained; and, perform other duties as required.

-Knowledge of educational curriculum design and Florida education standard alignment.

-Knowledge of fishing, fishing equipment and boating.

-Experience with firearms, archery equipment, hunting and shooting sports.

-Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.

-Ability to deal professionally and sensitively with a diverse audience and a wide range of contacts at different levels

-Ability to motivate, develop, and direct people as they work and the ability to delegate and provide collaborative team building.

-Ability to determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments.

-Ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

-Ability to assess budgetary needs and formulate policies and procedures.

-Ability to organize data into logical format for presentation in reports, documents and other materials.

-Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze data to develop alternative recommendations, solve problems, document work and other activities relating to the improvement of operational and management practices.

REQUIREMENTS

Incumbent will have financial disclosure reporting responsibility in accordance with Section 112.3145, Florida Statutes.

The incumbent is required to have a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Office hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday

This position requires up to 25% travel and work time outside of regular scheduled hours, including evenings and weekends.

Work at FWC is cross-functional meaning duties may cross division/office lines.  The Commission expects employees to function across FWC’s organizational structure by providing their skills and expertise wherever needed through work on teams or as directed.

Responsible for following the provisions and requirements in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, related to the Department of Financial Services rules and FWC’s invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures.
