DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES:  
 

This position is part of a regional team with FWC’s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management and is located in Panama City, FL. The selected candidate will assist with management, design, and implementation of  fish management activities to reach objectives of regional freshwater fisheries program in the sixteen counties of the Northwest Region. The selected candidate will be responsible for identifying and resolving technical problems and factors limiting success of Northwest Regional fishing programs; coordinates the collection, analysis and interpretation of biological, chemical and user group data; coordinate and implement management activities, e.g. fisheries habitat manipulations, liming and fertilizing, aquatic vegetation management, fish stocking, angler surveys, formulation and implementation of regulations, fish population sampling, water quality and limnological monitoring. The selected candidate will provide technical services to assist local governments, stakeholder groups, and school systems to organize fishing events, e.g. family-oriented fishing derbies, children’s instructional fishing clinics and classroom workshops/lectures. The selected candidate must also be able to set results-orientated goals and objectives; work independently and with other professionals, stakeholders, and members of the public to effectively and efficiently meet goals and objectives. 
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of Florida’s freshwater ecosystems
  • Knowledge of fisheries and techniques used for inland fisheries management
  • Knowledge of scientific program design
  • Knowledge of project planning
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used for data collection
  • Knowledge of data and statistical analysis
  • Skill in writing (both technical and popular articles)
  • Skill in operation of fish sampling equipment (electro fishing gear, traps, various types of nets, etc.)
  • Skill in the operation of boats and motors
  • Skill in the operation of laboratory equipment (microscopes, etc.)
  • Skill in the operation of computers and computer software programs (MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint; statistical software; GIS; etc.)
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to write and edit technical reports in a timely manner, with correct grammar and analysis of scientific data
  • Ability to compile and present scientific data in graph and table form using Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to professionally explain project, division, and agency programs, policies, and procedures to the public and other stakeholders
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and reasoning in decision making and problem solving
  • Ability to implement project management techniques and practices (scheduling/task management) to ensure completion of programs and projects in an effective and timely manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the public, stakeholders, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) staff
  • Ability to supervise others effectively
  • Ability to plan and prepare work priorities
  • Ability to motivate, develop, and direct staff as they work, and provide leadership for subordinate personnel.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a life or physical science.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a life or physical science and three years of professional experience in a field or laboratory program; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in a life or physical science, preferably in the fisheries/aquaculture sciences.
