FWC announces St. Johns River aquatic plant management public meeting on Feb. 25

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has added an additional date to a series of public meetings to gather community input about the agency’s aquatic plant herbicide treatment program.

The St. Johns River meeting will be held in Lake County on Monday, Feb. 25 from 5:30- 8:30 p.m. at the Astor Community Center, 24148 Ann St., Astor, FL 32102.

It will be co-hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and include discussion of the St. Johns River. The USACOE conducts plant control operations on the lower part of the river.

The meetings give the public an opportunity to provide feedback about management activities on Florida water bodies during the past 12 months.

Invasive plants degrade and diminish Florida's waterways by displacing native plant communities. Some invasive aquatic plants pose a significant threat to human welfare and cause economic problems by impeding flood control and affecting recreational use of waterways.
