Description of Duties:  Assists lead biologists in developing and implementing management plans for the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area.  Assists with the completion of annual work plans, budget proposals, performance reports, accomplishment reports and other administrative tasks.  Provides supervisor with information, recommendations and justification for regulations governing public use on the WMA.  Coordinates public hunting and other recreational activities on assigned areas, to include coordination and operation of check stations.  Responsible for recommending and implementing effective and cost-efficient habitat management practices on assigned areas.  Assists with planning and conducting of prescribed burning, ground cover restoration, wildlife plantings, mechanical and chemical vegetation treatments, oversight of timber operations, water level manipulations, and other projects.  Conducts population surveys of game, non-game, threatened and endangered wildlife species using scientifically accepted techniques.  Surveys habitat types and monitors changes which take place in these vegetative communities. Plans, develops and maintains projects to facilitate public use including road construction/maintenance, establishment of parking areas, culvert installation/repair, and construction and maintenance of boundary and interior fences and gates.  Assists with the development of bid specifications, contract development and oversight, and monitoring of vendor compliance.  Provides technical assistance to individuals, organizations and other agencies regarding wildlife biology and wildlife habitat management.  Participates in seminars and workshops relating to wildlife resource management.  Assists with responding to nuisance bear complaints, reports of road killed bears, and other wildlife issues within assigned area. Completes other duties or assists on other areas as assigned.

 

Emphasis will be placed on those individuals with experience and knowledge of Florida vegetative communities and their management.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Skilled in the use of computers for word processing, information management, communications, and data management/analysis.  Experience using ArcGIS. Ability to safely operate vehicles, ATVs, trailers, and boats up to 19’.  Excellent organizational (time management, office organization, information management), customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.  Experience in project management.  Ability to work well with minimal supervision, as well as participate actively in teams.  Ability to independently manage an array of projects simultaneously.  Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective internal and external working partnerships.

Level of Education:   Minimum: B.S. degree in the life or physical sciences; Preferred: B.S. degree in the biological sciences with 1 year of professional biological experience or a M.S. degree in the biological sciences.

License Requirements:  Will be required to obtain and maintain a Florida Class E Drivers License and Florida Certified Burn Manager Certification.
