Description of Duties:
The Florida Bass Conservation Center (FBCC) is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time OPS Fish and Wildlife Technician position. This position is considered a paid internship and is open to all current undergraduate/graduate students interested in gaining hands-on fish culture experience. The FBCC is the major freshwater gamefish production hatchery in the state of Florida, supplying fish such as Florida Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie, Channel Catfish, Bream, Triploid Grass Carp, Striped Bass and Striped Bass hybrids. The Center also conducts research on aquaculture methods. The incumbent will assist with intensive culture operations and should be highly motivated, detailed oriented and have an ability to complete tasks unsupervised during hatchery off hours. Examples of routine tasks include, tank cleaning, fish feeding, basic data collection and entry, performing water quality tests and oversight of mechanical operations. Work hours will be Friday and Saturday evenings from 2pm to 10pm while fish are inside the facility. During the summer, the hours will shift to 12am to 8am in order to monitor dissolved oxygen levels in the ponds.
Qualifications:
• A valid U.S. driver’s license.
No minimum experience required; however, education toward a career in a Fisheries/Natural Resource field is desired. This position is intended to bolster the resumes of students who desire a career in Fisheries/Natural Resources while providing excellent networking opportunities with state Fish and Wildlife biologists.
Level of Education:
Current undergraduate/graduate students with biology, fisheries, ecology, limnology, marine science, environmental science or similar background may apply.
