Associate Research Scientist

 

Job description: The State of Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) seeks an Associate Research Scientist to conduct research on the biology or ecology of marine turtles and to advise marine turtle conservation and management activities. This scientist will serve as a principal investigator for studies of marine turtles that may include life histories, ecology, migrations, reproductive biology, genetic identity and population biology.  He/she will be able to design, conduct, or oversee studies on sea turtles that address action items in state and federal recovery plans or that address issues identified by management agencies.  He/she will analyze data sets derived from multiple interdisciplinary sources and publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He/she will prepare grant proposals and reports and be responsible for all aspects of grant-related work including budgetary oversight and fulfillment of reporting requirements. He/she will regularly communicate with FWC’s marine turtle management group (ISM) and help coordinate overlapping activities of FWRI and ISM on sea turtle nesting beaches.  He/she will serve on inter-divisional and inter-agency teams on sea turtle-related conservation issues and represent the Section, Institute, and Department at public and professional meetings. He/she will promote and participate in public outreach efforts. Some overnight travel is required.

 

Required education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years of professional experience related to sea turtle research; or a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience as described above; or a Doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and one year of professional experience as described above.

 

Preferred experience: Applicants with experience conducting research on marine turtles, especially pertaining to reproductive biology or ecology or to habitat use and needs, and who have published this work in peer-reviewed scientific journals are encouraged to apply and may be given preference.  Applicants with experience conducting wildlife conservation and management activities, especially pertaining to marine turtles, may be given preference.

 

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of: marine turtle biology, ecology, and conservation; scientific terminology, principles and techniques including experimental design, hypothesis testing, sampling, and statistics associated with biological research. Skills: use of scientific laboratory and field equipment. Ability to: work independently; perform quantitative analysis of data; make taxonomic identifications; take tissue samples; use computer software for database, statistical, graphical, and word-processing applications; collect, organize, and analyze data; utilize problem-solving techniques; understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to the conduct of a Commission employee; prepare written reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication; prepare grant proposals for project funding; organize and track project budgets; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; supervise employees and volunteers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, colleagues, and volunteers; assess budgetary needs; work in excess of 40 hours per week and on holidays/weekends as necessary; and maintain a valid driver’s license.
