The Division of Freshwater Fisheries at the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking applicants for a full-time Biological Scientist IV located in Gainesville, Florida.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES:

This position serves as the Freshwater Resource Biologist for the North Central Region. The successful candidate is responsible for representing the Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management (DFFM) on issues concerning the Orange Creek Basin, Rodman Reservoir, lower St. Johns River, and other North Central Region water bodies and watersheds. The candidate will also represent DFFM on FWC Orange Creek Basin Working Group and will be expected to become chairperson of the group. 

As the region’s resource biologist, the candidate will be expected to facilitate the development of interagency partnerships, stakeholder relationships, and cooperative agreements with local governments in order to protect, manage, and enhance fisheries resources. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for establishing and maintaining contacts with anglers, fish camps, local governmental officials, tackle shop owners, fishing guides, outdoor media, fishing clubs, NGOs, etc. to ensure effective, two-way communication relative to FWC programs and projects. 

This position coordinates with Habitat and Species Conservation (HSC) staff to develop aquatic restoration, enhancement, and aquatic plant management projects that emphasize improving sport fish populations, angler access or the creation of new fishing opportunities. The successful candidate will demonstrate freshwater fisheries expertise when planning projects and other work in collaboration with HSC to ensure that DFFM’s interested are considered.

This position is responsible for the leadership and supervision of one Fish and Wildlife Biological Scientist II position.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles of fish and wildlife ecology and management
  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife habitat restoration
  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife research applications
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software applications
  • Skill in the use of scientific and field equipment

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work with internal and external technical personnel, managers, government officials, riparian land owners and other stakeholders

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to fish and wildlife management
  • Ability to travel overnight and work flexible hours to meet project objectives

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences is required. A competitive applicant will also have three years of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences and two years of professional experience as described above; or a doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the biological sciences.
