Description
This is an OPS position and has a fixed pay of $18.00 per hour with health
benefits. Maximum annual salary is $34,056.
This is an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, self-motivated individual with a commitment to conservation. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, leadership, community development, project design, and communication skills; will enjoy working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds; and will demonstrate dedication to the FWC mission and conservation of Florida’s fish and wildlife and habitat resources.
This position provides direct volunteer coordination for conservation volunteer projects, geared toward, but not limited to, upland terrestrial habitat and species, imperiled species, conflict and exotic (invasive) species in FWC’s Northeast region. The Regional Volunteer Coordinator position will be stationed at the Northeast Regional Office in Ocala, Florida. The Coordinator will manage volunteers and oversee volunteer programs throughout the Northeast region, including recruiting, training, and managing volunteers; planning, developing, implementing and managing volunteer programs; and providing volunteer management support to FWC land managers and biologists. The Coordinator will also network with external agencies to establish partnerships and assist with implementing volunteer projects on public and private lands.
Duties
- Work with FWC biologists and land managers to identify, plan, train, orient, and manage volunteers to implement conservation and citizen science volunteer projects
- Develop, coordinate, and manage multiple citizen science and conservation volunteer projects
- Counsel FWC staff on volunteer management practices and volunteer policies and procedures
- Work closely with the FWC Volunteer Program Manager and other regional volunteer coordinators to manage conservation volunteer projects
- Handle as much of the recruitment, training, and management of volunteers and volunteer documentation (paperwork) as possible to support FWC biologists and land managers
- Participate as an active member of the FWC Volunteer Standing Team
- Recruit volunteers for one-day, short-term, and long-term projects
- Promote FWC volunteer programs to regional organizations, colleges, student groups, clubs, etc.
- Develop and conduct volunteer orientations and trainings to meet FWC biologist and land manager needs
- Plan and implement volunteer recognition events
- Develop and maintain partnerships with other conservation agencies and organizations and private landowners to coordinate conservation volunteer projects
- Maintain accurate records of all regional volunteer forms and data
- Record volunteer hours in a volunteer database and assist FWC Volunteer Program Manager with compiling quarterly and annual reports as well as other agency report information on an as need basis
- Conduct formal evaluation of volunteer programs
- Deliver presentations at regional and statewide meetings, workshops, and scientific conferences

- Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking and preparing effective multi-media presentations
- Ability to effectively use computer programs to conduct work duties (including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) and experience with or ability to learn volunteer database and GIS (including ArcGIS) programs
- Knowledge of social media applications to promote volunteer opportunities
- Knowledge of Florida’s upland habitat and species.
- Ability and willingness to travel frequently (within 100 mile radius), with flexibility to work weekends and evenings as necessary
- Ability to operate power tools safely, including chainsaws, and to train and supervise volunteers performing fieldwork to adhere to safety guidelines and precautions
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Must have a current Florida driver’s license (or ability to obtain one upon hiring) and must provide own transportation to and from work
