 Interpretive Writer and Planner

 

Do you have a passion for wildlife conservation and telling the conservation and management story to audiences of all ages? Are you a writer who can pique a reader’s curiosity, effectively relate the message to different audiences and excite people about why they should care? Are you excited by the challenge of reaching diverse audiences through a range of mediums?

 

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is looking for an experienced Interpretive Writer and Planner to add to our Public Access and Wildlife Viewing Services interpretation team.

 

Duties include: researching, writing and editing text for interpretive signs, web pages, social media and publications; editing your own work for clarity and flow; proofreading maps; photo editing and coordination with photographer, cartographer, graphic artist or web designer. Includes interpretive planning and theme development for interpretation components of Recreation Management Plans.

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  1. Knowledge of Florida ecosystems and wildlife
  2. Knowledge of interpretive planning principles and experience writing interpretive plans.
  3. Excellent research and interpretive writing ability, able to synthesize natural history concepts and write clearly to a specific audience, able to translate scientific information into common language
  4. Effective public speaking skills and ability to produce and perform presentations using PowerPoint, laptop computer and projector
  5. Ability to communicate design ideas and collaborate with a graphic designer to combine educational text and graphics in a visually pleasing and effective manner
  6. Highly organized, able to manage multiple projects, has strong attention to detail, can prioritize work
  7. Is flexible and able to accept constructive feedback from colleagues
  8. Ability to collaborate with others and be an effective team member
  9. Ability to evaluate high-quality photography for use in various products
  10. Ability to interpret maps and work with cartographer
  11. Ability to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and LightRoom a plus.
  12. Ability to lift or carry boxes or other items weighing up to 30 lbs.

 

Position is full time OPS with health benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience,

$38,500 - $47,216. Requires occasional travel statewide to wildlife management areas which may be in remote areas with rustic conditions. Evening and weekend work on occasion.

 

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a natural science, but degrees in interpretation, environmental education, recreation, English, creative writing or journalism, with a strong interest and experience as a naturalist, will also be considered. Master’s degree is preferred. Minimum of three years of experience as a science-based nature writer. Must have valid Florida driver license.

 

Interview candidates will be required to submit one sample of original interpretation or natural history writing and a one-page essay about why you are the best candidate.
