Pre-qualifying is open for all candidates!

The Elections Office will be busy over the next three weeks as candidates file their paperwork to run for office. Today marks the beginning of the pre-qualifying period, which runs until June 5. The official qualifying week is from Noon on June 8 to Noon on June 12. Anyone wishing to run for office must file their required paperwork either during the pre-qualifying period or the official qualifying week in June.

Several news outlets have reported that candidates are qualified by petition, but that is only part of the requirement. Candidates have the option to either collect petition signatures or pay a qualifying fee. In either case, all candidates must also submit their qualifying documents during the qualifying period.

If you are planning to run for county office or a special district office, please call the Elections Office to schedule an appointment for qualifying. Otherwise, you may have to wait in the lobby if you arrive during another candidate's appointment time. City candidates qualify with the City Clerk.

Candidates who submit their qualifying documents during the pre-qualifying period will be added to our website as they file. A candidate's filing status will change from "Filed" to "Qualified" on our website after Noon on June 8, if they have completed their qualifications.

Candidate paperwork will not be accepted after noon on June 12. No changes can be made to the qualifying paperwork after this deadline. Candidates who wait until the last minute may have difficulty opening a bank account and submitting the notarized and completed qualifying paperwork if they wait until close to the deadline.

2026 Primary Election

The year 2026 holds special significance as it will not only be an election year but also the 250th anniversary of the United States. On July 4, 2026, our nation will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking a pivotal moment to honor our nation's founding.

Locally, we have an important midterm election approaching. Federal, state, county, and city offices will all be on the ballot this year. With many new residents in Flagler County, it is essential for them to learn about our government in Florida and the local offices. Additionally, some long-time residents may benefit from a refresher on the ballot, the significance of these offices, and their impact on our community.

This year's Primary Election is particularly important. Historically, voter turnout during Primaries in Florida has been low, with only a 29.3% turnout in the 2024 Primary. Many people may not realize that even if they don't declare a party affiliation, they can still vote in local nonpartisan races. Unfortunately, turnout among registered Republicans and Democrats has also been low.

This year, we must change the trend of low voter turnout. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, it’s essential for every voter to make their voice heard during the Primary elections.

Please encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to understand that they can make a difference by VOTING in AUGUST this year, not just in November. The elections begin in AUGUST, and we can do better than a 29% turnout—we should strive for much higher!

Several members of the Flagler County Elections Team traveled to the Duval County Elections Center in Jacksonville for the Florida Supervisors of Elections (FSE) Vote-by-Mail Workshop on April 28. During the workshop, we shared best practices for processing and managing vote-by-mail ballots to help ensure secure and efficient elections.
