City Commemorates Veterans with Wreaths Across America Event
The City of Dunedin honored the service and sacrifice of local veterans during its annual Wreaths Across America ceremony held Saturday, December 13, at Dunedin Municipal Cemetery. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the event locally, celebrated in partnership with theDanny Mariscal Memorial Fund Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the tradition in honor of Danny Mariscal, a former Dunedin High School student who died in a car crash in 2014.
“My younger, expert gamer, excellent human, kilt-wearing, trumpet- and bagpipe-playing brother, Danny, was buried here in 2014 at the age of 18 in his high school kilt,” said Heather Claire Mariscal Piorun. “Wreaths Across America was started for the 2015 season in Danny’s name.”
Through the generosity of sponsors, remembrance wreaths were placed at the gravesites of all 436 veterans laid to rest at the cemetery. A portion of the funds raised for the wreaths will also go to the memorial fund, which supports other charitable organizations, including Dunedin Cares and the Backpack Lady Project.
Wreaths Across America is a national organization. Through it's mission, wreath laying ceremonies were held at more than 4,225 locations across the United States and abroad. The wreaths at Dunedin Municipal Cemetery will remain on display through January 10.
