Plaque Unveiled at Dunedin History Museum Honors the Service of Major General Fred E. Marquis
Retired Major General Fred E. Marquis was honored this week by the City of Dunedin and Pinellas County during a downtown ceremony, during which a plaque recognizing his service to the nation and to Pinellas County was installed on the exterior of the Dunedin History Museum.
Marquis served as Pinellas County Administrator from 1979 to 2000. During his tenure, he oversaw the creation of the Pinellas Trail, which was named in his honor. Today, the 75-mile long Fred E. Marquis Pinellas Trail is used by more than 2 million people each year.
“When you invest in our community, that return lasts generations,” Marquis said at the ceremony. “Of everything I’ve had the privilege to work on, the trail stands out. It links neighborhoods and people and tells the story of what can happen when you work together with vision and heart.”
Before leading Pinellas County government, Marquis served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general. He served in Vietnam and later commanded the Army’s 143rd Transportation Command in Orlando. His military career culminated with service at the Pentagon.
