TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Division of Recreation and Parks, Office of Greenways and Trails will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the resurfacing and widening project for the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m.
Designated as a National Recreation Trail, this 16-mile multi-use trail was Florida’s first, paved rail-trail which was originally built with an 8-foot wide surface. After 20 years of service, it was necessary to address wear and tear and safety issues and to widen the trail to 12 feet to meet current state and national standards. Today’s ribbon cutting marks the Trail’s return to full service as a key recreational and economic resource for the region.
The ceremony is one of many trail-related festivities taking place statewide in celebration of October as Florida Greenways and Trails Month. This event is free and open to the public.
Event participants include:
  • Donald V. Forgione, Florida Park Service Director
  • Susan Matthews, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Forests in Florida Forest  Supervisor
  • Kerri Post, Visit Tallahassee Senior Marketing Director
  • Harry Reed, Capital Regional Transportation Planning Agency Executive Director
