Good afternoon,
So far this calendar year, 95 infant deaths related to unsafe sleep have been reported to the Florida Abuse Hotline. In an increased effort to prevent these tragedies, Florida government agencies, state officials, community organizations, medical professionals and first responders came together to launch The Safe Sleep Campaign. The campaign brings existing safe sleep initiatives together and provides resources to launch new projects.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep ALONE, on their BACKS and in a CRIB. Cribs should be clear of items like blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, strings/cords, sleep positioners and bumper pads. Babies should sleep in their own cribs, as the risk of infant death is 40 times higher for babies who sleep in adult beds.
- The campaign encourages the public to donate new Pack ‘n Plays (portable cribs) to designated fire, emergency and law enforcement stations. Note that pack n plays will not be distributed from stations. If you are in need of assistance to provide your baby with a safe sleep environment, please contact your local Healthy Start Coalition.
- Free printed materials are available.
- Listen to one mom's story about how her 6-week-old daughter died due to unsafe sleep, and another mom's story of how bumper pads almost killed her baby.
- This 30-second video PSA shows exactly what should and should not be in a crib.
We want to include as many partners as possible, so please be sure to let us know on our Partner page if you know of an organization who might like to get involved.
