Switch Together Deadline to Join Co-op Extended to Sept. 30
 Residents who might be interested in bringing solar energy into their home now have until Sept. 30 to sign up for the Switch Together program. Supported by Solar United Neighbors, the program is designed to make exploring solar energy more affordable and straightforward.

Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes
 Mosquitoes can spread illness and may bite indoors or outdoors at any time. Use an age-appropriate insect repellent as directed, keep doors and windows closed or properly screened and repair holes in screens. At least once a week, empty or cover items that can collect standing water, such as buckets, birdbaths, pet dishes, gutters and tires. Even a small amount of water left standing for more than a week can become a breeding site.

Keep Yard Waste Out of Recycling Bins
 Grass clippings, leaves, branches, weeds and other yard debris do not belong in recycling bins. These materials can contaminate paper and cardboard, become tangled in sorting equipment, and cause recyclable loads to be rejected. Plastic bags filled with yard waste are also considered contamination.
The city of Clearwater collects yard waste once a week. Place yard waste at the curb no more than 24 hours before your scheduled service day and by 7 a.m. that day. Keep materials clear of overhead wires, trees, poles, mailboxes and vehicles. Bag or box leaves and grass clippings in containers weighing no more than 50 pounds. Cut and bundle limbs and brush before placing them curbside; all curbside bundles must be 4 feet or shorter.
Each single-family home and multifamily dwelling unit may dispose of up to 40 cubic yards of yard waste per calendar year. The city collects only materials cut and gathered by the property owner. Landscapers, tree-trimming companies and other contractors must remove any debris they generate.

Flood Insurance Rate Map Informational Open Houses for Alligator Creek Area of Clearwater
 FEMA is preparing to issue new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for the Alligator Creek watershed area of the city of Clearwater that may affect several properties. Some residents in the affected area may now need flood insurance, while others may no longer need it. To check if a flood map has changed for a property, search an address and toggle between the Current Effective FIRM and Preliminary FIRM tabs, which show the proposed changes to the flood maps.
Informational open houses are scheduled for affected residents and business owners to learn how and why flood insurance rate maps will change, how the proposed new flood maps will be used, and steps they can take to protect themselves from the extensive damage that floods often cause.

Celebrating 110 Years: The Carnegie Legacy Continues
Clearwater’s library story began in 1911, when the Clearwater Library Association opened a subscription library on the second floor of Peoples Bank on Cleveland Street. As use and community support grew, the city pursued funding for a permanent public library.
The library will recognize this history with a free, all-ages celebration from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the fourth-floor Heritage Studio at the Main Library, 100 N. Osceola Ave.

Traffic Updates

Drew Street: Lane closures now extend to Betty Lane and include the Orangeview Avenue and Hillcrest Drive intersections. Betty Lane remains open. The closure begins at Saturn Avenue instead of Keene Road.

Drew Street: The Hobart and Highland avenues intersections will reopen. Drivers should use caution and allow extra travel time.

Memorial Causeway: Reclaimed water system improvements may cause intermittent weekday lane closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. along the Clearwater Memorial Causeway.

Pierce Street: Closed between Osceola and Fort Harrison avenues through Oct. 1. A lane shift on Osceola Avenue is planned for Sept. 10 to Oct. 1.
