Protect Your Family From Mosquitoes
When the rainy season returns, so will those pesky mosquitoes. These insects pose a threat to public health by transmitting diseases, such as West Nile and Zika. It is important that we all continue to do our part to combat mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illnesses.
The best way for residents to prevent mosquito bites is to follow the 3 Ds:
-
Dress in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing with closed-toed shoes.
-
Defend using an insect repellent with a CDC-recommended ingredient, such as DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
-
Dump or cover standing water, which can be found anywhere in your yard that holds water, such as old tires, planters, children's toys, ornamental ponds, bird baths, wheelbarrows, and other outdoor items.
Residents are encouraged to use screens on open windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering their home. Visit https://pinellas.gov/mosquito-control/ for additional resources.

Saving Water Starts at Home
If your utility bill is unusually high, you might have a leak. Over the years, experience has indicated that water meters are extremely reliable and rarely fail. So, if your utility bill is unusually high, the problem will generally lie with either water usage or leaks.
In the spirit of Water Conservation Month, you can take small steps that will make a big impact in saving water inside and outside your home.
Indoors
- Only run full loads in your washer and dishwasher.
- Use shorter wash cycles for lightly soiled laundry.
- Thaw food in the refrigerator or microwave — not under running water.
- Scrape dishes instead of rinsing before loading the dishwasher.
- Install high-efficiency showerheads, faucets and toilets.
Outdoors
- Check your home’s irrigation system for leaks, and follow the city's watering restrictions.
- Don’t leave sprinklers unattended. Use a timer or alarm to remind yourself to turn them off.
- Use a hose with a shut-off nozzle when you can.
- Consider installing a rain barrel with a drip irrigation system for watering your landscaping. Rainwater is free and better for your plants because it doesn’t contain hard minerals.
