FEMA to Host Public Open House
Residents Near the Alligator Creek Area of Clearwater May Now Need Flood Insurance
An open house will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clearwater Fire Training Facility, 1716 N. Belcher Road.
Affected residents and businesses should plan to attend the open house to learn how and why the local risk of flooding has changed, how the proposed new flood maps will be used, and steps they can take to protect themselves from the extensive damage that floods often cause. No formal presentations will be made at the open house.
Check the new Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) online to see if your property’s flood zone or your base flood elevation has changed, and determine how your property will be impacted. When on the map, find the "Effective FIRM" tab, press and select "Preliminary FIRM." You may toggle between the two maps.
Coachman Park Palm Replacement Project
An outside tree service will begin removing all palm trees in the Civic Gateway area of Coachman Park on Tuesday, Aug. 19, due to the presence of lethal bronzing disease. Unfortunately, nearly half of the existing palms have already succumbed to the disease or are at high risk. Other palms along Cleveland Street in the shopping and retail area may also be affected and will be inspected to determine whether they require removal.
To address this proactively, our city crews have approved a replanting plan that includes more resilient and aesthetically pleasing tree species. The palms will be replaced with:
- Foxtail Palms (which are more disease-resistant)
- Live Oak Trees (to provide shade)
- Flowering ornamentals, such as Orange Geiger and White Crape Myrtles
During removal, approximately two feet of trunk above the root zone will remain to allow Parks & Beautification staff to safely extract the root balls shortly afterward. While the full replanting process will take time, efforts will begin as soon as the removal is complete.

Clearwater Remembers William B. Horne II

Aug. 14 marked four years since the city of Clearwater lost one of its best, William B. Horne II. Bill, as many knew him, served as Clearwater's longest-running city manager of 22 years, after a long and successful career serving our country in the United States Air Force. Horne's legacy is in everything throughout our city, from Coachman Park to the infrastructure that reaches our residents' homes, to what will become the William B. Horne City Hall.
We are honored to have known him, and he is missed by many — today, tomorrow, and always.

A Sustainability Tip to Keep You Cooler
Ceiling fans should spin in different directions depending on the season. During the summer, make sure your ceiling fans rotate counterclockwise, so it blows air downward. That way, you can feel cooler, without dropping the thermostat any further. In the winter, reverse the fan to allow warm air to circulate without the cooling effects.
