Do Not Bag Recyclables
Why You Should Not Bag Your Recycling
1. Bags Jam the Machinery Plastic bags and film get tangled in sorting machines at recycling centers. This causes delays, extra maintenance, and even shutdowns of entire processing lines.
2. Risk of Entire Loads Being Trashed If recycling is bagged, workers often can’t see what’s inside—so it’s treated as trash. One bag of recyclables can send the whole load to the landfill.
3. Safety Issues for Workers Bagged recycling must be opened by hand, putting workers at risk of injury or exposure to hazardous materials like broken glass or needles. It’s a serious health and safety concern.
4. Plastic Bags Require Special Recycling Most curbside programs do not accept plastic bags. Instead, take them to grocery store drop-offs or special collection sites for proper recycling.
What To Do Instead
- Place recyclables loose in your recycling bin—no bags, no ties.
- Use a reusable bin liner or rinse your bin regularly if you’re concerned about mess.
- Collect plastic bags separately and bring them to an appropriate recycling location.

Staying Cool Indoors Without Breaking the Bank
Keep Indoor Spaces Shaded: Reduce indoor heat by closing blinds or curtains during the day, especially on sun-facing windows. For additional insulation, consider adding reflective films or blackout curtains to block out sunlight. This can significantly lower your cooling needs and create a more pleasant living space. Shading your home effectively helps maintain comfortable temperatures while conserving energy.
Use Thermostats Wisely: Installing a programmable thermostat lets you manage your home’s temperature more efficiently. Set it to higher temperatures when you are away to conserve energy. This approach can help lower your electricity bill during peak usage times. Thoughtful thermostat settings are a key part of an eco-friendly household.
Choose Light, Airy Clothing: Dressing for the heat can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel indoors and outside. Choose breathable fabrics and loose-fitting styles to stay cooler naturally. This may also help reduce your need for air conditioning. Prioritizing comfort in your wardrobe is a simple but effective way to adapt to hot weather.
