School Zone Safety
With the upcoming school year in Clearwater, it’s time for a reminder about back-to-school safety. Drivers need to be on the lookout for Clearwater Police Department crossing guards helping children make it safely to and from school.
Pay attention to the yellow flashing lights that signify school zones. It’s also important to watch out for school buses that are stopped to pick up or let off students. Crossing guards are present every morning and afternoon near elementary and middle schools in Clearwater. Be alert for the crossing guards, and follow their instructions. Be patient, as many students and parents will be learning new routines.
Stopping for school buses that are picking up or dropping off students is important. Confused about when you must stop? See the above graphic from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for valuable information.
Always keep an eye out for Clearwater Police Department crossing guards. They work near elementary and middle schools in the morning and afternoon. Their job is to keep students safe, and they can’t do that without your help. Be sure to follow their instructions, and always yield to crossing guards and students in crosswalks.
Enhanced Traffic Enforcement
The Clearwater Police Department will be conducting enhanced traffic enforcement details near schools the first week of classes.
The department’s traffic enforcement team, along with additional patrol officers, will be on the lookout for violators in and around school zones and other areas of concern.
Remember to slow down in school zones when the lights are flashing, stay off your phones in school zones and stop for school buses when they are picking up or dropping off students.
