Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins
Sea turtle nesting season in Pinellas County runs from May 1 through Oct. 31. It is crucial for residents and visitors to be aware of preventable impacts on these endangered creatures. To help protect sea turtles and their hatchlings, individuals should:
- Close curtains after sunset.
- Turn off decorative lighting.
- Install turtle-friendly lights.
- Flatten sand castles and fill in holes when leaving the beach.
- Properly dispose of trash.
- Remove personal items from the beach.
- Avoid walking on sand dunes.
- Shield artificial lights from the beach.
- Refrain from using flashlights or cellphone lights at night.
Sea turtle nests are protected by state and federal law, and disturbing nests can result in costly penalties or jail time.

Free Hazardous Waste Disposal
Every year, residents hurry to get rid of old gasoline and hazardous chemicals before an incoming hurricane. This often overwhelms drop-off centers, causing long lines. To avoid delays and ensure safe disposal, officials encourage residents to drop off these chemicals now, before a named storm threatens the area.
Pinellas County offers two free drop-off sites for household hazardous waste, such as gasoline, oil, paints and rechargeable batteries:
-
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Center, 2855 109th Ave. N., St. Petersburg. It is open Tuesday through Friday, and the first and third Saturday of each month, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
-
HHW North, 29582 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater. It is open select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents must provide proof of residence in Pinellas County to use these sites.
