Stress Less With Stress-Fighting Foods
|
|
The following foods may not make the stress go away, but they may reduce the negative health effects that are associated with chronic stress, including depression, anxiety, insomnia and cardiovascular disease.
- Turkey, shrimp, dairy, soy and pumpkin seeds contain high amounts of the amino acid tryptophan, which is associated with a boost in the “happiness hormone” serotonin, which in turn may lessen depression and anxiety.
- Broccoli, brussels sprouts and asparagus are loaded with folic acid, a vitamin associated with serotonin production.
- Dairy products, sunshine and other sources of vitamin D may boost serotonin levels through an increase in the enzyme that converts tryptophan to serotonin.
- Oatmeal and other complex carbohydrates can stimulate the brain to produce serotonin. Carbohydrates that are absorbed more slowly help to ensure a steadier supply of serotonin.
- Oranges, grapefruits, red and green peppers, and many other fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C, which can aid in lowering blood levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, and ease the subjective feeling of being stressed.
- Crunchy veggies like carrots and celery sticks do not possess any special nutritional content for fighting stress per se, but the crunchy sensation that comes from eating them provides mechanical stress relief.

Age-Based Catch-Up Limits Increase for 457K Investment Contribution Limits
Did you know your investment plan allows for a higher catch-up limit if you are age 60-63?
We understand that saving for retirement is an important goal and that you might like to save a bit more than you could in years past. Starting in 2025, if you are age 60, 61, 62 or 63, you can choose to contribute more towards retirement.
Discover the Benefit
Your plan allows those between ages of 60 and 63 to save more than the age-50 catch-up limit:
- The higher limit is an additional $11,250 for 2025, in addition to the normal contribution limit of $23,500 per year.
- This limit applies for each year you are ages 60, 61, 62 and 63.
- For the year you turn 64, the limit will revert back to the age-50 catch-up limit, which is $7,500 for 2025.
The higher catch-up limit of $11,250 is instead of the normal catch-up limit of $7,500, not in addition to it. The higher catch-up limit is indexed and may change each year.

Tip 1: Make a List Reflect on your daily routine and write down habits you want to change, like skipping breakfast, sitting for long periods, or opting for sugary snacks.
Tip 2: Choose One Habit to Change Pick one habit to change and make a simple plan. For instance, swap out an afternoon sugary drink with water, or take a 10-minute walk during your lunch break.
Tip 3: Commit to Seven Days Focus on the new habit for the next seven days. If you slip, no worries. Simply start over for another seven days. Change is challenging, and Omada is here to support you every step of the way.
You have access to Omada as you pursue your health goals in 2025. Get personalized health support from anywhere, at no additional cost to you, if eligible.
If you or your covered adult dependents are enrolled in the city's medical plan offered through Cigna, are at risk for type 2 diabetes or heart disease, and are accepted into the program, you'll receive the program at no additional cost.
