Temporary Changes in Our Water Treatment Process
Sept. 23 to Oct. 12, 2024

Each year, Pinellas County’s drinking water distribution system temporarily switches its water treatment method from chloramines to chlorine. This will occur from Sept. 23 to Oct. 12, 2024. Clearwater customers are affected because the city buys some of its water from Pinellas County.
People who are sensitive to chlorine may notice a stronger smell or taste during this temporary change in our water disinfecting process. Users of kidney dialysis machines and owners of aquatic life should contact their respective service providers for additional guidance.
Why is the drinking water treatment changing?
Chloramines are commonly used for drinking water disinfection. Twice a year, disinfection switches to chlorine for Clearwater customers. This is a common water treatment practice for water systems that normally use chloramine throughout the year.
What are drinking water disinfectants?
Chlorine and chloramines are common disinfectants used to remove microbial contaminants, such as bacteria and viruses. Disinfection occurs during the drinking water treatment process.
These simple steps may minimize chlorine odor or taste:
-
Run the tap for a few minutes before using.
-
Fill a pitcher of water and let it sit for several hours to allow any residual chlorine to dissipate.
-
Consider installing a carbon filter on kitchen/bathroom faucets or shower heads, or replace existing filters with new ones.
Your water is safe to drink and meets all federal and state drinking water standards. Call Clearwater Public Utilities at (727) 562-4960 with questions.

News & Updates
Recycle Right
When everyone isn't recycling right, entire batches of recycling get ruined. That's what has been happening recently in Clearwater. Recently, our crews have collected loads of "recycling" that were 50% garbage and were rejected by our recycling vendor.
In fact, more than 32 tons of recycling of the 755 tons we collected from residents was rejected by our recycling processor in August, due to high levels of contamination, like that shown in this photo.
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for R’Club Community Pride at Gateway Celebrates Facility Renovations

On Sept. 13, Clearwater city officials gathered for a significant event celebrating the grand reopening of R’Club Community Pride at Gateway. Mayor Bruce Rector, Councilmember Mike Mannino, Commissioner Chris Latvala, and staff from the Economic Development, Housing and Community Redevelopment Agency joined in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The city supported the renovations of this high-quality childcare facility through Community Development Block Grant funding. These funds enabled crucial improvements, including rehabilitation renovations, enhanced air quality, new paint, and playground safety upgrades. The project is a testament to the city's commitment to fostering a safe and nurturing environment for the community’s youngest members.
R’Club Community Pride plays a vital role in providing accessible, quality childcare for Clearwater families, and the newly upgraded facility ensures that children can learn and play in a healthy, secure environment.
Congratulations to the Glenwood Neighborhood
The Glenwood neighborhood in Clearwater recently celebrated 100 years as a neighborhood. They unveiled a new Little Free Library, built by Glenwood resident Cindy Foret-Papas, and a plaque to commemorate their 100 years as a Clearwater neighborhood.
