Marshall Street Water Reclamation Facility Exceedances Updates

Since the arrival of Tropical Storm Debby in early August, the Marshall Street Water Reclamation Facility has experienced a number of exceedances and treatment upsets that caused partially-treated wastewater to flow into Stevenson Creek and also storm sites on premises. Most recently, those have occurred from Aug. 22 to 29 and totaled 18.12 million gallons, as the plant bypassed tertiary treatment via sand filters, one of the last stages of wastewater treatment. There have been no active exceedances since the early morning of Aug. 30, 2024.

Let’s Reduce Car Usage in September
Join us for two important observances in September to help promote sustainable transportation alternatives. Zero Emissions Day is Sept. 21, when people are encouraged to minimize their carbon footprint for a day by avoiding the use of fossil fuels and using renewable energy sources instead.
Car Free Day is Sept. 22 and promotes walking, cycling, or taking public transit instead of driving cars. These two activities can help decrease vehicle emissions, improve air quality, and alleviate traffic congestion.

Bags Are Bad For the Bin
Plastic bags should never go in your recycling bin. Plastic bags, including grocery bags, jam the sorting machinery at the recycling sorting facility. Take plastic bags back to the grocery store or throw them in the trash.
Do not bag your recycling, either. Bags that have recyclables inside are pulled from the line and are thrown away as trash at recycling sorting facilities, since workers can’t see what’s inside. Everything in your bin should be clean, empty and loose.
