 June is Men's Health Month
|
|
This June, we have a lot to celebrate! In addition to Pride, Juneteenth, and PTSD Awareness, we also recognize Men’s Health Month.
Did you know:
- Men die of suicide four times higher than the rate of women. (National Institute of Mental Health article)
- Men saw outpatient therapists 5.5 times more in person during the pandemic, and virtual visits increased 79 percent during that same time. (Sage Journals study)
- Men can struggle with telling the difference between stress and depression. (Ethnicity and disease article)
- Sixty-five percent of Gen Z men report that “no one really knows me well.” (Equimundo study)
- More than half of surveyed teachers report teenage boys diagnosing their own mental health issues from what they see on social media. (The Hill article)
We are here to help. Remember that you are able to find a therapist 24 hours a day on MyCigna. Take time to search the large network of therapists and filter down by your specific needs, such as the symptoms you are experiencing. Below are some great resources for information on men’s health:
Be mindful of the men you love in your life, and let’s make sure they know they are supported. Here’s to a happy and healthy summer.

Volunteer as a LunchPal
Summer is here, but school administrators are searching for mentors for next school year. Mentors change the lives of thousands of Pinellas County students each week. Research has shown that mentoring helps improve their grades, attendance, behavior, social interactions with adults and outlook on school.
One-on-one mentoring sessions are designed to meet at least twice per month for 30 minutes on the student's lunch break.

Has your life become unmanageable because of a friend or loved one’s drinking? Are you searching for personal serenity in the chaos of these life events? Would you consider sharing fellowship with your peers who are experiencing similar situations to find peace?
While Al-anon doesn’t give advice, it does offer guidance on implementing self-care thus improving self-worth. Positive self-worth empowers someone to change their attitudes and behaviors. Focusing on oneself becomes the path to recovery. In Al-Anon members practice the three C’s: I did not cause it; I cannot control it; I cannot cure it. Al-Anon meetings provides a safe environment for the individual to learn from the experience, strength, and hope of their peers.
|
How do you know if Al-Anon can help you? Take a moment to reflect on these questions:
- Do you get blamed for someone else’s drinking?
- Do you minimize how much the drinking impacts you?
- Do you worry about someone else’s drinking?
- Do you have money problems because of someone else's drinking?
- Do you tell lies to cover up someone else’s drinking?
If you answer yes to even one of these questions, check out their website or reach out for more information.

Learn More About Prostate Cancer
Screenings are Available at the Employee Health Center
Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow out of control. It's the most common cancer in American men. Symptoms include difficulty urination, weak/interrupted urine flow, trouble emptying the bladder, pain or burning during urination, blood in urine, painful ejaculation.
Most men without prostate cancer have specific levels detected on a blood test. When prostate cancer develops, the detectable level often goes above 4. About 15 percent of men with a level of 4 will have prostate cancer if a biopsy is done. Men with levels from 4 and 10 (often called the “borderline range”) have about a 1 in 4 chance of having prostate cancer. If higher than 10, the chance of having prostate cancer is more than 50 percent.
Win A Prize Get your levels checked out at the Employee Health Center, or have the results from your urologist sent to the clinic throughout the month of June.

Hey Man...Your Health Is Important, Too
Men, your loved ones rely on you. Improve your health for them and yourself.
More than one in three men are overweight or obese, which can lead to many serious health conditions, including heart issues, trouble sleeping and joint pain. Ignoring your health can also weigh heavily on your loved ones and those who rely on you.
Omada is different from other programs: • 100% human led. A real, personal health coach gives you one-on-one support. • Not a celery-stick diet. Get healthy with foods you already enjoy. • On your time. If you have your smartphone, you have your health coach. • Tools to guide you. Smart devices to track your progress (yours to keep). • Made for you. A wellness plan and lessons tailored to your goals and lifestyle.
If you or your covered adult dependents are enrolled in the company medical plan offered through Cigna, are at risk for type 2 diabetes or heart disease, and are accepted into the program, you'll receive the program at no additional cost.
