Since everyone is shouting E-A-G-L-E-S, let's swoop in for a chat about our national bird.
The iconic bald eagle was once endangered due to illegal hunting, habitat loss and the pesticide contamination. With so many challenges, America’s bird was heading into extinction.
Laws that prohibit anyone from hunting, selling or possessing a bald eagle were put in place by the federal and state governments to help replenish the population. The United States banned DDT in the early 1970s for its harmful properties to the environment and human health. With these protections in place, bald eagles are no longer endangered.
Bald eagles can be seen across all three counties in Delaware. The species is most spotted near water, giving them access to fish which is their main food source.
Much like the Philadelphia Eagles, bald eagles have made a comeback in recent years. However, they need the support of the public to keep them on the road to victory for many years to come.
You can help us continue to survey bald eagles by reporting if you see a bald eagle nest here.

Introducing Field Trip Fridays! An initiative launched by new Secretary Greg Patterson to engage colleagues, elected officials and stakeholders and to see DNREC’s key projects and programs. Our first Field Trip Friday kicked off with a visit to the north side of the Indian River Inlet, where we are nearing completion of the state's phase of the emergency dredging and beach nourishment project.
As Field Trip Fridays continue throughout the year, we look forward to fostering stronger connections between leadership, staff and community partners — highlighting the Department’s work and ensuring meaningful conversations about Delaware’s environmental future.

Delaware Recycles
Recycling conserves valuable natural resources and energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps us take responsibility for our waste today, as opposed to leaving a burden for future generations.
Delaware has one recycling program that is the same whether at home, at work or at school. To learn more about how to recycle or check out our Recyclopedia tool that takes the guess work out of recycling, visit de.gov/recycling.
