On the heels of the month-long celebration of Earth Day, May is shaping up to be filled with lots of opportunities for education, observation, conservation and good, old-fashioned fun outdoors. Here are some things to look out for this month:
Ticks! - Since May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month, it's important to learn about how you can remain safe while enjoying the outdoors this spring and summer. Check out our Top 10 Tick Facts or report a tick interaction at de.gov/ticks.
Flood Awareness Week- Did you know Delaware is the country's lowest lying state? To bring awareness to our potential flood risk, Governor Carney has declared May 20 through 24 Delaware Flood Awareness Week. With the effects of climate change, a flood can happen at any time. To learn how you can prepare, visit de.gov/floodrisk.
American Wetlands Month- Wetlands provide many important services to humans and the environment. They improve water quality. They provide habitat for fish, wildlife and rare plants, and they protect us from flooding and storm damage. You can download and print the DNREC Wetlands Activity book for students!

Weatherization Assistance Program
Paying for home improvements that create a comfortable, draft-free space can be challenging, especially if you have mouths to feed. Our Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) ensures that families in need don’t have to stretch a tight budget to make their home more comfortable. Recently, WAP serviced the home of a single mother of four, keeping her family cool this summer at no cost to them. The energy savings through weatherization will save her $3.70 for every dollar the program invested in her house, providing some financial relief just in time for her kids’ summer vacation. Learn more at de.gov/wap.

Tundra Swan Monitoring Program
As part of our larger effort to manage and monitor waterfowl in Delaware, our Division of Fish and Wildlife set out to capture tundra swans over the past few months. One of the swans was fitted with a GPS neck collar, allowing researchers to collect data. The swan departed from Delaware, stopping several times on the way north. The bird then flew nonstop into New York overnight, reaching 3,000 feet and 69mph. As it approached Michigan, GPS tracked it at 83mph at similar altitudes. The swan has traveled over 800 miles so far.
