We have had a HOT summer, and it will continue to get hotter. That's one big reason why I believe it is very important to fund DC's climate change, natural area protections, and environmental efforts in our city budget. Troublingly, Mayor Bowser's budget slashes the city's Sustainable Energy Trust Fund - paid for with fees on all our utility bills, and meant to help the entire city transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources - and redirects much of the money to pay the DC government's own energy bills. While I haven't had a chance to review in depth the version of the budget Council is voting on today, Council Chair Phil Mendelson has said that the Mayor's changes to this fund are overall too difficult to fully unwind. That's disappointing, and I encourage you to be in touch with Councilmembers Mendelson, Allen, and Lewis-George, the Mayor's office, and myself to voice your support for using resident-paid utility fees for their intended purposes!
Also, last month I was proud to co-sponsor an ANC 4D resolution in support of retaining DC's Sanctuary Values Act, which the Mayor proposed to rescind in her budget. I'm very pleased to report that Councilmembers heard the voices of ANC 4D and other DC residents loud and clear and voted to retain the Sanctuary Values Act!
🎷 Wednesday Jazz Series on Kennedy Street: Uptown Main Street hosts a free monthly jazz concert on Wednesdays on the 700 block of Kennedy St NW. Listen to jazz while you grab a bite from a local spot, and let the music carry you into the evening.
🎶 DPR Jazz in the Park Throughout the summer, DPR is hosting Jazz in the Parks on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm. Join for free performances from local artists in scenic open spaces in Ward 4 and around DC. Grab a chair or blanket and come out to one of the upcoming events! Tuesday, August 5th will be at Petworth Rec Center.
For more local events, check out DPR, DC Public Library, and NPS.
🧑🏻⚖️ Come to our ANC meeting this Wednesday evening! You can come virtually or in person, details below. You'll hear from representatives of the Mayor's office, Councilmember Lewis-George's team, and the Office of Campaign Finance. We'll also be talking about our ANC grants, hear from Petworth Peanuts, and discuss our ANC finances. And at the end, you can stand up for a few minutes and share whatever is one your mind to help the community.
🫵🏼 Help ANC 4D give out community grants! Along with Commissioner Kayla Baker, I'm co-chairing a new pilot committee of residents and Commissioners to solicit and evaluate our ANC community grants. We still have about $10,000 we could give out in this fiscal year, and we want to be sure they are distributed equitably and meet the needs and interests of the neighborhood. Interested in joining the committee? Please fill out this interest form!

Government News You Can Use
🌱 Go Green with Riversmart Homes!
This July, embrace the sunshine and take steps to protect our environment with the RiverSmart Homes program, managed by the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). Together, we can make our city greener and keep our waterways cleaner!
With RiverSmart Homes, you can get city support and rebates to:
-
Add eco-friendly features like rain barrels, shade trees, rain gardens, BayScaping, permeable pavers, and re-vegetation.
Stormwater runoff poses a real challenge to our local ecosystems, but you have the power to help! This summer, encourage your neighbors to join RiverSmart Homes and take proactive steps for a healthier, greener future.
Let’s celebrate the season by caring for our environment and our community!
🐀 What's the best way to cut down on rats? Reduce food waste!
The Department of Health presented to ANC 4D at our June meeting about rodent and mosquito control. The most important thing they advised to reduce rat populations in alleys? >>Keep food out of trash cans!<< (they sure are hungry and persistent!)
How, you ask? That's where the Office of Waste Diversion comes in! There are so many fantastic programs to help residents donate and compost excess food so that it doesn't end up in the trash. You can drop off your food waste at a collection site every weekend, bring it to one of the new Food Waste Smart Bins 24/7 (there are 3 in or near ANC 4D!), or sign up for the wait list for the home compost pick-up pilot program. Remove ALL food packaging prior to composting. Finally, if you have extra packaged food that is still fresh, uneaten, & healthy, donate it rather than compost it. Search for "Edible Food" at http://zerowaste.dc.gov/what-goes-where.
🗑️ Put Your Trash & Recycling Out The Night Before
Due to sustained high temperatures during the summer months, please advise residents to be prepared for early trash, recycling, and food waste collection starting at 5:30 am through September 5th, 2025.
Residents are advised to place all waste materials at their point of collection the night before their scheduled collection day to ensure pickup.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping our crews stay safe during extreme weather conditions.

Good Trouble Lives On: John Lewis Day of Action on Thursday
From our friends at Free DC and their partners:
This July 17th, we will march, not for what this country claims to be, but for what it can and must become.
We will honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, who showed us that freedom is never handed to those who remain silent, but it is won through direct, peaceful acts of good trouble. We will march side by side because civil rights are under attack, because executive overreach is choking the lives and futures of our communities, especially those already pushed to the margins. We will march because silence is no longer an option.
This is how we win: by showing up for each other, standing together in the streets, and moving in solidarity toward justice.
Bring your loved ones. Bring your courage. Stand with us as we show the world that the fight for justice did not end with John Lewis, it lives on through us.
Together, we will build the world we deserve.
