Thank you to everyone who attended last weekend's Defender Yourself bystander training. The video to the training can be found here. The accompanying PowerPoint Presentation can be found here.
There was great interest in hosting future training on this subject matter and I will do all I can to meet that demand. Stay tuned for more details.
From Commissioner Cohen's June ANC 4B07 Newsletter:
"Much of what is going on right now in Manor Park is related to 245 Peabody Street, the former Mennonite Church whose new owners have filed a change of use motion with the BZA to turn the site into a child development center with up to 80 students and 20 staff. The applicants and owners of the property did recently release a much-anticipated transportation study that is available on my website. I realize that neighbors may have questions or concerns about this transportation study. If this is the case, please send me your questions, comments, and concerns by July 1, 2024."
"Also, because the ANC takes a summer recess (note there will be no ANC 4B regular public meetings in July and August) I will be filing a motion with the Board of Zoning Adjustment to postpone the hearing date for Case #21101 until later in September. This is so that we can hold our July community meeting (see above), as well as have the owners and applicants present to the entire ANC at ANC 4B’s regular public meeting in September (September 23, 2024)."
"If you are interested in this issue I would highly recommend that you attend the July community meeting at Capital City Public Charter School. Also, my goal is to continue to represent the interests of the community and while trying and find an outcome to this case that works for both the neighbors and the applicants. I will note that neighbors are always welcome to petition the BZA for “party status” in order to present their own concerns/support/opposition."
Ronald Austin Memorial Park Legislation
Commissioner Cohen, ANC 4B07, confirmed with Council Chairman Phil Mendelson's office that markup on the ‘Ron Austin Memorial Park’ bill will take place after the Council’s summer recess. This is good news, as once legislation is passed, the Triangle Park at North Dakota, 2nd St., NW and Quackenbos St., NW can officially be renamed.
Ward 4 Public Safety Meetings
Recently, I've received questions from community members about how best to stay updated on public safety issues in our neighborhoods. One of the best ways to stay engaged is to connect directly with our 4th District MPD, who offers several helpful resources for community members:
-
4th District Community Group
- 4th District MPD operates a community listserv, providing residents with the latest public safety updates. Through this group, community members can also ask questions and get answers directly from MPD. To join the community listserv, click here.
-
4th District Commander's Walks
- Each week, 4th District Commander Lavenhouse organizes public safety walks in the community, bringing together law enforcement, ANC commissioners, and neighbors. The location for the walk is chosen based on the events of the previous week, and my team also joins these walks to give the latest updates on our public safety work. You can join the 4th District listserv to get updates on when and where these walks will be scheduled.
-
4th District Sector Meetings
- In addition to Commander's walks, 4th District MPD holds regular sector meetings to engage with the community to help better understand the events and processes happening in our neighborhoods. To attend these meetings, join the listserv or reach out to Community Outreach Officer Robert Hamrick at Robert.Hamrick@dc.gov. To locate your PSA and sector, click here.
-
4th District Citizens Advisory Council Meetings
- The 4th District Citizens Advisory Council is a non-government community organization that works to communicate, collaborate and coordinate information with MPD. 4th District CAC meets every month, excluding July and August. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 20th. You can join by reaching out to 4dcacdc@gmail.com.
WMATA Better Bus Network Town Hall
On Thursday, June 27th, at 6:30pm, WMATA will be hosting a town hall at Coolidge High School to answer questions from community members about its proposed Better Bus Network Plan. This will be an excellent opportunity for community members to engage directly with WMATA on the details of the plan.
The biggest question that remains is how WMATA plans to accommodate travelers in Ward 4 whose regularly used routes are being cut in the proposed plan. These changes will affect everyone, from people commuting to get to work, to kids who take the bus to and from school. I look forward to getting answers to many of these questions at next week's town hall. To RSVP to the town hall, click here.

Unified Communication Center UCC
DPW is committed to delivering efficient and effective services to our residents and quickly resolving issues. As our partner in providing streamlined and effective resolutions, we wanted to share the best channels for residents to utilize.
In order to improve our customer service and our internal tracking mechanisms, DPW launched the Unified Communication Center (UCC) in November 2023 aimed at decreasing our response and resolution times. Through the UCC, we have consolidated our call centers and phone numbers into one accessible line. In February 2024, our average hold time was under 2 minutes, affirming our swift assistance for all callers. We also consolidated our emails into one central address. Each contact, whether by phone or email, is provided a Service Request (SR) if they don’t already have one. For a service inquiry, our representatives offer service information and pass along Service Level Agreement (SLA) benchmarks. In instances where an SR is past our SLA benchmarks, our operational escalation team intervenes to quickly resolve the outstanding request.
To ensure smooth communication for everyone, as a first step, we kindly request you share the contact details of the UCC with all members in your office and constituents who reach out to you. This will make the service resolution process quicker for residents and raise awareness about DPW's new communication center. DPW’s leadership team is here to address continual issues or problems that have not been addressed satisfactorily by the UCC.
The UCC is still new, and staff are still learning. If you have used the UCC, please share feedback on what’s working well and what needs improvement. We’d love to hear from you so we can continue to improve!
UCC Phone: (202) 673-6833 (Mon – Fri) 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
