CANNABLISS UPDATE
REOPENING SOON UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP
After a brief closure at the end of January 2024, Cannabliss is returning in the coming days to serve the District’s growing community of patients seeking safe and effective medical cannabis solutions. The closure has been a shock to many in our community and I have fielded many inquiries about what was happening.
Cannabliss first opened their doors in September 2019, serving 80-95 patients a day, and has been a vital addition to our Sheriff Road corridor. It was a difficult call to receive from the owner, Norbert Pickett, explaining the difficult decision to close, the regulatory struggles to be successful in the current market, and the legislative work we championed to improve conditions for both businesses and patients. But it was great to hear his first priority was to the wellbeing of the employees and the patients that depend on Cannabliss. He stated to me this would be temporary and he kept his word.
With Norbert's strong commitment to the patients and the Deanwood community, Cannabliss will be reopening in the coming days under the new ownership group, SK Quality Services, with majority of the employees returning. The new Cannabliss will remain focused on prioritizing patient education and support. Knowledgeable and compassionate staff will be available to answer questions, assist with product selection, and help patients navigate the District’s medical cannabis program. Cannabliss will continue to offer a curated selection of top-shelf products, ensuring patients have access to the most effective options for their specific health needs.
On a personal note: This weekend, I accepted an employment offer to join the management team at the new Cannabliss. I’m very proud of what Norbert Pickett was able to build up right here in Deanwood, and I look forward to being a part of the continued success under the new owners, Mike Rothman and Chong Son. For nearly 5 years, Cannabliss has been able to overcome a lot of obstacles and still remains resilient to this very day. Norbert will continue to be a big part of the Deanwood community and remain as the owner of the entire property that encompasses the dispensary.
I will keep the community posted on the reopening date this month and a grand reopening celebration.

ABOUT ANCs
An Advisory Neighborhood Commission is a non-partisan, neighborhood body each made up of locally elected representatives called Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. The ANCs' main job is to be their neighborhood's official voice in advising the District government (and Federal agencies) on matters that affect their neighborhoods. Although they are not required to follow the ANCs' advice, many District agencies are required to give the ANCs' recommendations "great weight." Moreover, District law says that agencies cannot take any action that will significantly affect a neighborhood unless they give the affected ANCs 30 days advance notice. This includes zoning, streets, recreation, education, social services, sanitation, planning, safety, budget, and health services.
The ANCs may also initiate recommendations for improving city services, conduct neighborhood improvement programs, and monitor resident complaints. The ANCs began operating in 1976. To learn more, visit https://anc.dc.gov.

ANC 7C JOINS MAYOR BOWSER'S CITYWIDE ANC PUBLIC SAFETY MEETING
L-R: Vice Chair Anthony Lorenzo Green (7C04), Chair Antawan Holmes (7C07), Treasurer Carrie Brown (7C09), Secretary Carlos Richardson (7C03)
Last Saturday, ANC 7C participated in Mayor Bowser's Citywide ANC Public Safety Meeting held at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center. In the table discussions, we raised issues important to our constituents and learned about the Bowser Administration’s strategies to address crime and improve safety in our neighborhoods. ANC 7C recognizes the importance of public safety in fostering strong, vibrant communities. We appreciate the opportunity to participate in this important meeting and collaborate with the Mayor's Office and fellow ANCs on solutions to keep our residents safe.
The meeting covered a wide range of public safety topics, including:
-
Secure DC Omnibus Amendment Act of 2024
- The Metropolitan Police Department's (MPD) crime prevention strategies
- Initiatives to support youth and at-risk residents
- Community engagement and collaboration efforts
I shared my thoughts with NBC 4's Derrick Ward about the importance of learning from what hasn't worked, instead of repeating the same solutions expecting a different result. Our commission remains committed to working with the Mayor's Office, MPD, and community stakeholders to address the root causes of violence, and create a safer and more secure environment for all residents of Washington, D.C.
