ANITA BONDS INTRODUCES “SONIA GUTIERREZ CAMPUS WAY DESIGNATION ACT”
At today’s legislative session, Councilmember Anita Bonds (D – At-Large) introduced the “Sonia Gutierrez Campus Way Designation Act of 2013.” This bill would designate the 500 block of V Street NE as “Sonia Gutierrez Campus Way,” in honor of the contributions that educator and community leaders Sonia Gutierrez has made to the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School over the past forty years. A new workforce development site for the school, known as the Sonia Gutierrez Campus, was established earlier this year. The campus sits on the street to be designated by this act.
Sonia Gutierrez is the President and Founder of the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School, a bilingual adult education center serving over 2,500 students annually and more than 60,000 students during its 40-year history. The new school’s programs include a variety of ESL programs, GED preparation in both Spanish and English, training for the US citizenship test, job readiness training, job placement, and immigration counseling.
“Ms. Gutierrez is an exemplary figure whose accomplishments in the fields of education and cultural diversity are unsurpassed. Her commitment to bilingual education and adult learning has changed the lives of tens of thousands of DC residents, helping them to become strong community residents,” stated Councilmember Bonds. “I have no doubt that the new campus, named in her honor, will help continue this legacy. It is my pleasure to help enshrine her contributions in the community.”
The designation was co-introduced by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie and co-sponsored by Councilmembers Jim Graham, Jack Evans, Vincent Orange, and Muriel Bowser.
