The Ward 5 Report:
Office of Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie
June 7, 2013

Hello Ward 5 Residents,

This week, we witnessed a string of senseless acts of violence in our community. It is important that we come together to prevent these types of heinous crimes. That is why I have called on the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to make sure that we locate the responsible parties and prevent further violence. On June 20th, I will host a public safety and crime forum with the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, MPD, and community stakeholders to hear what steps MPD is taking to ensure the safety of residents and provide important safety information. The forum will be held at the Israel Baptist Church, located at 1251 Saratoga Avenue, NE, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The death of Malik Spears, the young man who was recently murdered in the Brentwood community, is a terrible tragedy. I have spoken with Malik’s mother, and my prayers are with his family and friends. Malik was only 16 years old, full of potential, and had his whole life ahead of him. This is yet another horrible example of how gun violence continues to plague our community. Further, I am extremely disheartened to learn about the sexual assaults and burglaries that have taken place in the Ward 5 community. These types of crimes and any other form of criminal activity will not be tolerated.

Public safety is one of my top priorities, and as a government, we must do everything in our power to ensure every resident is safe. I will continue to work with residents, our law enforcement partners, and my Council colleagues to enhance public safety in the District of Columbia.

Best,

Kenyan
