As Summer comes into full swing, DMPED continues to advance priorities that support economic growth for our businesses and residents. DC has already hosted a number of incredible events this month, including Capital Pride, World Cup watch parties, the Wizards first pick in the NBA draft, the re-opening of the National Geographic Museum, and Eat250, where 200 DC local restaurants participated.

Beyond the fireworks and festivities, this Independence Day is also a time to reflect on the societal values and aspirations contained within the Declaration of Independence. In addition to its political ideals, the Declaration of Independence sought to address the American colonies’ core grievances, which were deeply economic. By celebrating our foundational freedom to work, trade, and prosper, we are reminded that our strength as a community is achieved by building our collective prosperity.

Washington, DC Retail Strategic Plan
 Mayor Bowser, DMPED, and the Washington DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP) recently released a new Retail Strategic Plan – a comprehensive study and action framework designed to strengthen Washington, DC’s retail sector and position the District for long- term growth in the current economy.
The new study finds that the District’s retail market remains strong, supported by nearly 700,000 residents, 743,000 jobs, and more than 27 million annual visitors. Together, that demand generates an estimated $14 billion spending base citywide. At the same time, the report notes that retail performance varies significantly by submarket, with residentially anchored corridors outperforming office-dependent areas that have been impacted by reduced daytime foot traffic.
Key recommendations outlined in the Retail Strategic Plan include to:
- Promote the attraction of priority retail categories, including food and beverage, fitness and wellness, and entertainment, while continuing to support other retail categories that are important neighborhood amenities.
- Implement tenant attraction strategies specific to key retail submarkets.
- Continue to make it easier for retailers to open and expand in DC by streamlining permitting, licensing, and interagency coordination.

DMPED Grant Opportunities
Washington, DC is home to more than 75,000 small businesses, over 98% of all businesses in the District, power our economy and employ nearly half of our private sector workforce. Under Mayor Bowser’s leadership, the District has continued to invest in an inclusive business environment that supports entrepreneurs at every stage. DMPED currently has a few grant programs accepting applications, supporting small businesses and community vitality across DC. Key open opportunities include:

Rhode Island Avenue Support Grant – Up to $350,000 to offset rent or tenant improvements for long‑term leases in Rhode Island Avenue NE corridor. Applications close Friday, July 3, 2026.

Vitality Fund – Incentive for large companies relocating or expanding in DC. Applications close Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 4 PM.

Commercial Property Acquisition Fund – Up to $300,000 for DC businesses purchasing commercial property. Rolling applications until funds are allocated.
