Overnight Lane and Ramp Closure – Eastbound Maine Avenue SW
Anticipated Start: June 18, 2026
(WASHINGTON, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in coordination with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), will implement overnight lane closures on eastbound Maine Avenue SW between Independence Avenue SW and 12th Street SW.
Motorists should follow the posted detour route and traffic control devices, as depicted in the map below. This eastbound Maine Avenue SW construction activity will occur for one evening, during overnight hours from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., as early as June 18, 2026, weather permitting.
Additionally, the ramp from northbound 14th Street SW to eastbound Maine Avenue SW will be closed. During these overnight hours, motorists seeking access to eastbound Maine Avenue SW should remain on I-395, using the following detour route:
14th Street SW Ramp Closure Detour Route:
- Motorists follow the I-395 north detour (follow signs for Capitol Hill / Nationals Park / Verizon Center)
- Take exit 4 toward Maine Avenue SW / SW Waterfront / Nationals Park
- Take a slight left onto the ramp to 9th Street SW towards the traffic signal at Maine Avenue SW
The road, lane, and ramp closures are necessary to accommodate construction activities in the work zone along Maine Avenue SW. Crews will refresh pavement striping and relocate concrete barriers to establish a new work area in the median.
Traffic controls, including signage, will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area. DDOT urges all travelers to stay alert, follow posted signage, and use caution when traveling near the construction zone.
Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time and follow all posted detour and traffic-control signage in the area. Traffic-control devices will be in place to safely guide motorists, pedestrians, and other roadway users around the work zone.
Motorists should expect delays when traveling through the work zone and are advised to use caution near road work crews and equipment.
 Long Bridge Project
The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Long Bridge Project is a 1.8-mile rail improvement that will relieve one of the biggest rail bottlenecks on the East Coast. The project will improve reliability and expand capacity for both passenger and freight trains traveling between Virginia and Washington, DC. The project will create a continuous four-track corridor between the Long Bridge Aquatic Center in Arlington County, Virginia, and L’Enfant Plaza in Washington DC. It includes five new rail bridges and two new pedestrian/ bicycle bridges. A new two-track rail bridge will be built over the Potomac River next to the existing two-track Long Bridge, along with a new bike and pedestrian bridge connecting Long Bridge Park and the Mount Vernon Trail in Arlington to East Potomac Park in DC.
The Long Bridge Project is one of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s many rail projects across the Commonwealth. Learn more at: www.vapassengerrailauthority.org.
