Traffic Advisory: Overnight Lane Closures on Maine Avenue SW and 14th Street SW
Scheduled for June 15 and June 16, 2026
(WASHINGTON, DC) —The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in coordination with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), will implement an overnight road closure on westbound Maine Avenue SW between 12th Street SW and the 14th Street Bridge for construction activities related to the Long Bridge Project. The work will occur for two consecutive evenings, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., starting on Monday evening, June 15, through Wednesday morning, June 17, 2026.
During this time, westbound Maine Avenue SW will be closed from 12th Street SW to the Salamander Hotel entrance, and motorists will be directed to follow the signed detour route. Additionally, southbound I-395 traffic entering westbound Maine Avenue SW will be reduced to a single lane. Lane closures may alternate between the left and right lanes during construction activities; however, one travel lane will remain open at all times for motorists from southbound I-395 onto westbound Maine Avenue SW.
The road closure and lane closures are necessary to make adjustments to the work zone along Maine Avenue SW.
- Crews will refresh pavement striping and relocate concrete barriers to establish a new work area in the median.
- Access to local properties, parking garages, and loading docks will be maintained.
Traffic controls, including signage and detour information, will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area. DDOT urges all travelers to stay alert, follow posted signage, and use caution near the construction zone. This work is weather permitting.
The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Long Bridge Project is a 1.8-mile rail improvement that will relieve one of the biggest rail bottlenecks on the East Coast. The project will improve reliability and expand capacity for both passenger and freight trains traveling between Virginia and Washington, DC. The project will create a continuous four-track corridor between the Long Bridge Aquatic Center in Arlington County, Virginia, and L’Enfant Plaza in Washington DC. It includes five new rail bridges and two new pedestrian/ bicycle bridges. A new two-track rail bridge will be built over the Potomac River next to the existing two-track Long Bridge, along with a new bike and pedestrian bridge connecting Long Bridge Park and the Mount Vernon Trail in Arlington to East Potomac Park in DC.
The Long Bridge Project is one of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s many rail projects across the Commonwealth. Learn more at: https://vapassengerrailauthority.org/.
